iTunes crashes

itunes 9.0.1.8 on windows XP.
have several devices, two iphones 3g, two ipod nano 3rd gen's.
Problem is with a nano 3rd gen that I don't sync often. Nano has lastest update.

It works fine - but last time I synced was a few months ago, had put some old podcasts on it. Now, brought it up from car to sync again. When I plug it in, get a message:
Podcasts on the iPod ... cannot be synced because all of the podcasts selected for syncing no longer exist.

Great, click 'OK', window goes away, and I can sync music, etc fine.

BUT: when I try to fix this problem by clicking on the ipod, then clicking on 'Podcasts' tab, iTunes crashes.

Very repeatable, have rebooted, etc. Nothing bad happens to the ipod.
No problems syncing with other devices (including syncing podcasts, or going into podcast tab).

Any ideas?

Hi Phil! Sorry about my delay. Been a bit tired today, and it's been taking a while to hack through all the replies I have to make for the folks with cryptic troubles.

I've tried removing the preference files in turn as directed (on my Touch's iTunes) but iTunes still closed/crashed when selecting Podcasts. There are no plug-ins by the way, I did check the plug-ins folder.

Well, at least that's another couple of possibilities off the table.

So, I'm thinking we'd better check content issues now.

One of the differences between the test account and the usual account will be the podcasts showing up in the podcasts pane (or at least, that would show up in your usual account's podcast pane if only we could get in there without the ... "dratted" ... thing crashing).

Sometimes iTunes crashes can be caused by specific podcast files that are damaged in the right/wrong way ... especially video podcasts. A few years ago, folks had some trouble with +Ask a ninja,+ and a year or so after that there were a few troubles reported with +Mad money+ (something to do with Jim Cramer, at least).

So maybe we might be able to isolate this to a specific (or at least specific sort) of podcast feed that you're subscribed to.

Try heading back into your test user account again, and launching the iTunes there. *Remember to go to the "Devices" tab and make sure that "Prevent ipods and iphones from syncing automatically" is checked.*

(At this point I can't give specific instructions because I don't do a lot of podcasting stuff ... so I'm just hoping that what I'm going to suggest makes sense.)

Try adding your usual podcast subscriptions to the library in the test account one-by-one. After each addition, try plugging the ipod/s in, and seeing if you can still get into the podcasts tab without crashing. After each "crash test", disconnect the iPod/s prior to doing the next addition.

Does a particular podcast addition suddenly start up the podcast crash in the test account?

Following this with interest since I have the exact same problem - the Podcast pane crashes iTunes. (Other ones work.) I can sync, but I can't "see" my podcasts or make any changes to them.

I did note that one podcast in particular was NOT updating, so I deleted it from iTunes. Didn't help at all.

Yeah, that sounds more like a content file issue (rather than a preference file issue), step.

Interesting ... try opening the file in QuickTime. (Right-click the file, drift your cursor over "Open with ..." and either pick QuickTime Player or do a "Choose program ..." and select QuickTime Player from the list there.)

Does it open, or do you get a QuickTime crash? If it's a QuickTime crash, what error message do you get with that one?

Hi, I'll try your suggestion of adding Podcasts one by one to the new user account until I get a failure, but that will take me a while so I'll post again "at some point in the future".

The fact that others have the same Podcast pane problem (KCCC above) might still mean that it's a particular type of Podcast, but it would be interesting to know if anyone can get into the Podcast pane.

I posted earlier with a similar problem--iTunes crashing when I clicked on the Podcasts tab. I solved it by creating a new library and then added each of my podcast folders, one by one, to the new library.

Several times as the files were being copied, iTunes "encountered an unexpected problem and had to close." I would restart iTunes and copy the next folder. I ended up with most of my podcasts intact in the new library, and I was able to click on the Podcasts tab with no problem.

Then I went back to the original library and deleted all the podcast files in each folder that had produced that error message. Now when I open iTunes with the original library and click on the Podcasts tab, it doesn't crash.

To create a new library, hold down the Shift key while opening iTunes. Click on Create New Library.

To switch between libraries, hold down Shift while opening iTunes, as above, but then click to choose the library you want and browse to find it. By default, iTunes opens with the library you had open the last time.

To add podcast folders to the new library, use "Add folder to library" under the file menu.

If all this works, you can delete the new library.

I now think the problem was several corrupted files, probably the result of accidentally disconnecting the iPod from the computer without ejecting it properly.

I greatly appreciate the suggestions of everyone who contributed to this thread.
