Cannot print wirelessly with Canon MF4350d via Airport Express/Extreme

Hi everyone

Please help me! I just purchased the Canon MF4350d and cannot successfully wirelessly print via Airport Extreme USB, no matter which configurations I try.

I have read every post I can find on these forums, and so far, no luck. I have tried installing the printer by Default or IP and neither works.

If I add the printer via Bonjour (I'm using the most current UFRII driver), I get an error message saying that the printer is not supported or not acquired correctly when I try to print.

If I try via IP using the IP address of 10.0.1.2, I get a message that Network Host 10.0.1.2 is busy; will retry in 30 seconds...

Has anyone had success in setting up this (or a similar) printer wirelessly via USB (not a network printer)? If so, please advise... (or if you can point me to a thread, that would be appreciated as well.)

Thanks!

Hello Steve,

I don't believe you will be able to get this working. This was the case with 10.5 and still seems to be the case with 10.6. The issue is with the UFR2 driver - even the latest v2.00. The driver is not compatible with the USB of the Airport.

If you had an N model of MF, then you could connect the printer to the Ethernet of the Airport and add the printer using LPD.

But with the USB connected printer, even using IP protocols such as LPD or HP Jetdirect-Socket (which Windows can use), the error message stating that the printer is not supported will appear.

Do you know if there are any other USB wireless routers that would be compatible?

None that I have ever found. But then I haven't tested that many. I have only ever had an Airport Extreme (the 54Mbps 'dome' and now the 11n box) and I have my MF4680 connected to it via Ethernet.

But I had a mate you bought an MF4150 and he had tried a Dlink print server and an Airport Express, none of which worked for him (he was using 10.5 at the time). In the end he took the MF back and got a Ethernet MF model.

Hi Steve,

I don't think I have written the instructions previously for the MF series so here goes.

1. Press the Menu button
2. Arrow left to 11. System Settings and press OK
3. Arrow right to 3. Network Settings and press OK
4. The display will show 1. TCP/IP Settings. Press OK to enter.
5. The display will now show 1. IPv4 Settings. Press OK to enter.
6. The display will now show 1. IP Address Auto. At this point you need to decide if you are going to let the router assign an IP address to your MF or if you are going to manually enter an IP address. Personally I think if you choose an IP address for the MF, it will save possible trouble in the future should the router assign a new IP address to the printer (which can happen if the printer gets turned off for a while). But if you are not sure what address to give to the MF, then let the router decide by pressing OK at '1. IP Address Auto' and pressing the arrow key so that it shows ON.
7. The display will now show 1. DHCP. Press OK and press the arrow so that ON is displayed. Press OK.
8. The display will now show '2. BOOTP'. Press the STOP/RESET button to exit the Network Menu.
9. Now turn off the power to the MF, via the switch on the side of the printer. Connect the Ethernet cable between the router and the MF4370 and turn the power back on.
10. Give the machine 30 seconds to connect to the network and then press the Menu button again.
11. Arrow left to System Settings and press OK
12. Arrow right to Network Settings and press OK
13. Arrow left to 4. View IP Address and press OK
14. The display will show 1. IPv4. Press OK
15. The display will now show 1. IP Address. Press OK
16. Now the IP address assigned to your MF4370 will be shown. Make a note of this address and then press Stop/Reset to exit.

Okay, now we can create a new printer queue on the Mac.

17. Open Print & Fax and click + to add
18. Select IP > LPD
19. Enter the IP address of the MF4370 and then a queue name of LP
20. For the name, you can change it from the IP address to something more meaningful, like MF4370DN (this is just a text field so it doesn't matter what you enter).
21. In the Print Using menu, drop the menu and click 'Select Printer Software'.
22. When the search window appears, type MF43. This should make 'Canon MF4360-4390 (UFRII LT)' appear in the list. Select this and click OK. Now click Add to complete the network print queue creation.
23. Try printing to the new queue and reply if you still need help...

Hello. I'm new to this so if I am stepping on toes . . . my apologizes. I just want to make sure I understand the situation. I too have a Canon MF4350 printer. I too have tried to hook up the printer to my Airport Express via USB port without success. - It seems I am (s.o.l.) or out of luck. Am I correct? - If so, if I were able to hook up the printer directly into my router, would I then be able to print wirelessly? -

Again if I am of the mark by posting this question here, my apologizes. Look forward to any direction you may be able to give. - Thanks!

Hello muttdog and welcome to Apple Discussions.

The MF4350 only has a USB connection. Regardless of what network device you use, the driver has a limitation with determining the printer model when shared via USB and this stops you from using the printer. If you had a model with Ethernet, such as the MF4370DN, then you would be able to connect the printer to the Ethernet port of your wireless router and print as the driver will work with this type of connection.

So, with the MF4350, all you can do is connect it directly to your Mac via USB in order to print.

hey! i also picked up a MF4370dn but it won't work with my airport express :o(
i plug it into the USB port of the airport express but it still won't print. The airport definitely recognized the printer because it should up when i was trying to configure it. I had all the drivers and everything set up for the printer but when i hit print, it says it is unable to print and the print job stays in the queue

Did you get yours to work?

Hi Palu:

I read your posts about using the ethernet connection on the MF4370dn to print wireless via the apple extreme. I tried this and still am having trouble. I looked up the IP address in the printer and input that address into the system preferences on my mac, but I keep getting a "stop" message in the print queue.

I followed the steps that you outlined above, but to no avail.
I am returning this huck-of-junk MF4370dn if I cannot get this to work soon.

(There should be posts warning airport extreme users.)

Thank You.

The Stop message generally indicates an incorrect network configuration. Therefore I would like to see what settings you have on your Mac and what you address you have set on the printer.

On your Mac, could you open System Profiler, select the Printers entry located under Hardware, and then select the MF4370dn in the top right hand pane.

In the bottom right hand pane will be all the settings for this printer queue you created. Could you copy this information and paste back here.

Then, still in System Profiler, select the Network heading in the left column and in the top right hand pane, select the network connection you are using. You mention wireless so select Airport if this is so.

Then in the lower right pane pane, copy all this data and paste back here.

Thanks Pahu for this very helpful setup instruction for MF4370DN.

I was having issue that MF was not printing. It turned out that there was a conflict between the Canon printer (MF4350d and MF4370DN, maybe just the version 2.06 printer driver in general) with Logitech unifying USB receiver. If the USB receiver is plugged in, the printer will display "Cannot Open Print error", once the receiver is unplugged, the printer starts working. I wish I would have found out this earlier, as I was on the phone with Apple Support (about 3 hours in total) and spent a day reformatting my new mac mini. Hopefully this would help someone resolving similar issue as there is no such issue posted anywhere on any mac support forum.

Hey again,
I wrote you recently about these same issues. I mistakenly thought the issue was resolved after picking up the 4370dn. It started dropping the printer connection via printer sharing and failing to locate the driver. So I returned it.
Now I'm back to trying to make the 4350d work via printer sharing. I add the printer, everything appears okay, then when I try to print the icon comes up on my dashboard and disappears immediately as though it is working, but nothing prints.
Any suggestions?
Thx,
Greg
