iPod randomly skips songs, resets itself mid-play

My iPod 120GB has ALWAYS had the issue of skipping a song randomly when it's in the middle of the song... it has annoyed me to death for a VERY long time, and I sent it in to Apple and was told there was nothign at all wrong with it.

In the past few weeks, it's also developed the problem of just randomly resetting itself in the middle of playing a song. It will freeze up, and then display the black Apple screen.... in the middle of playing a song!! When it's fully charged. iPod has been restored SEVERAL times, with all updated software.... nothing helps!!! Is there some step I'm missing, or should I try sending it to Apple again?

Is it always the same songs that this happens to? It could be a corrupt music file that's causing you the headaches...

Additionally I noted once a long time back that the iPods like the music file at a CBR (Constant bit rate) encoding method... Otherwise they sometimes have issues playing them or moving through the file...

Sometimes using a encoding application, can take that problemed file and re-encode it to a good file... I've used some of the standard Roxio music and CD programs to do this... Quick simple and working in seconds!

Same problem with my 120GB! Sent it to Apple and they say it operates according to specs. Well, if their specs suggest it is okay for an iPod to skip at random 3 to 4 times per day, then I should have read the fine print better! That is NOT acceptable and I have never had an iPod with this problem...this is my 6th iPod and each one has these same music files, I have never had to consider the bit code rate or anything of this sort.

Same here, this is my second iPod and the one I had before, I never had an issue. It never skips on the same song, it can be just whatever random song I'll be playing...

And today, a NEW issue appeared. When the iPod reset itself, this time, not only did it go to the black Apple screen, BUT the colors were WAY off and it was like a bitcolor blue, black, and grey look on the screen...... like it had lost it's ability to code it's colors or something???? Then when it reset, it was like that for a few moments, then reverted back to normal colors.

I will try that program you mentioned, but where do I go to get the Roxio thing?

Much the same...This is my second ipod. The first 80G classic had no problems...rock solid. but this 120g IS A PIECE OF CRAP! I sent this unit back to apple only for them to tell me it works fine. Well, it still skips songs (randomly. does not matter which songs) and every couple days locks up and resets with the black apple display. Battery is fully charged. It happens while docked or just carrying around. Apple, you need to step up an address this situation. This is happening to quite a few people. fix your product. you are staring to be know for crappy merchandise.

My iPod Classic has the same issue as yours. It's been like this since the first day. Actually everything started at first sync. At about 1000 songs it just reset itself, and showed the black screen with the apple logo.

First time I used it, everything worked fine for about three hours, when the iPod suddenly skipped to next track. I tought it was a broken track and went back to check. But I could slide trough the whole track with no problem. Tried to re-play it and it worked fine. Two tracks later the iPod just reset to the black apple logoed screen again, and it asked me to select language.

This happened two-three times a day. I normally used the iPod for about 5-6 hours each day. So the problem happened about every two hours.

A friend of mine told me had the same problem with his 120GB iPod Classic, and that the store he bought it exchanged it with a new one without question.
I bought mine trough Apple store, so I contacted them. Sent the iPod, and got it in return with the answer that nothing was wrong.

First thing that happened after sync was done and i ejected the iPod was: RESET.
And the first reset mid-play happened at the second song allready. And here comes the similarities to yours even closer alidc658. The colors where white cyan blue black. See bad mobile picture in this link: http://bildr.no/view/518999

I have not contacted Apple again.
I'm not using my Classic because of the problem
I am a very dissapointed customer
I will never shop anything from Apple Store ever again

Yes, that is the SAME exact screen that shows up on mine when it resets!!! This is apparently a widespread problem.... and I think it's Apple that's to blame, NOT iPod users... I just want the issue resolved, even if it takes sending my iPod back to Apple again. I love my iPod but this is just such a hassle!!! I'm a full time student in college, with just a part time job.... I don't make enough money to buy a new iPod every time issues start occuring with mine!

Same issue like all the above.

My ipod is playing and suddenly goes into the wierd colors screen... I had other ipods but never had this issue before... and I am playing the same music!

I got also the skipped songs... What I noticed is that it would always affect the same songs untill I restore the iPod then songs that used to work start skipping and the songs which were problematic before are now working perfect.

in the meantime my brother , which has an itouch plays the same songs with no problem...

Still think its a songs issue???

If anybody has an idea please help. this is really becoming very disturbing... I restore my ipod allready a thousand times with no results...

Very disapointed...

Thanks

My 120GB Classic started doing exactly this just a few days ago - first noticed it on Thursday night in the car, worked fine on Friday and then suffered the same issue again on Saturday morning. Track stops halfway through, or at the end of a track, and the distorted blue Apple screen displays. Was considering taking it to the Apple Store next weekend as it's only a few weeks shy of being a year old - was bought in early December last year. I've also not had this problem with two previous generations of iPod.

I'm not having the distorted screen, but my 120 GB Classic constantly stops playing any long file (podcasts, audiobooks, etc.). I'll be listening to a podcast, for example, and suddenly it will stop for a second and start playing the next file (which, for some strange reason, is the previous episode of the podcast). If there is no file after the one I'm playing, the iPod just stops. When I navigate back to the file I was listening to, the iPod has forgotten where I was and just starts playing at the beginning. This is a real pain in a 90 minute podcast, and nearly maddening when listening to a 6+ hour audiobook (especially when you have to find your place while driving).

I bought this iPod because my old 80GB was having a similar problem, but not with the same files. In fact, that one was on a Mac, but I've since moved my iTunes over to my new Windows machine. The new Classic has been used on both the Mac and the Windows PC with the same problems on both. Also, it never seems to skip twice in the same spot. If I go back to the file I was listening to and navigate to the same place, I can always play it just fine until it decides to skip again 10-20 minutes later.

It really sounds like there is an issue here, and I hope that Apple can figure it out.

I have been having the exact same problem. I contacted Apple's telephonic support. They told me that I needed to take the iPod to an Apple Store to have someone at the Genius Bar observe the problem. Apparently, Apple is not aware of how widespread this problem is. Please, if you are experiencing the same problem, post something on this discussion board or contact Apple Technical Support. Maybe if enough people complain about this problem, Apple will actually try to fix it instead of just giving people the run around. I'll keep you all posted on the outcome of my Genius Bar appointment.
