shut down with no warning 49% battery left.

Macbook Pro 15".

This is a brand new battery. I bought it because I was told my laptop was shutting down early with no warning because the battery was bad. Well, this is a new battery and it's doing the exact same thing.

I have NEVER had a warning prior to shut down. And it doesn't go to sleep. It completely shuts off with NO warning and I lose anything I was working on at the time.

There is no way I can recalibrate it according to the many posts already about this problem. They all suggest recalibrating the battery by running off the battery and waiting for the low power message. There is no message. And I can't run the battery down because it won't go down past 49%. Or at least that's what the computer is showing.

Since this is not a battery issue I'm thinking that this is a software issue. Something that happened with one of the leopard updates.

So what now? What can I do software wise to repair or update the battery sensing part of my software?

Is possible that the new battery contains dead cells out of the gate? I would try a second new battery. Obviously, it may very well be something else, however, it is possible that the new battery was DOA.

This may not be the same problem as everyone else, but I had an issue with my MBP17 shutting down abruptly. I found it was because of dead cells in the battery. This is my understanding:

Essentially, if your battery has a bad cell, the SMC needs to know about it so it can skip it when on battery power. The battery "training" recommended by AppleCare is supposed to do just that. Unfortunately, I could not train my MBP because if I left it for more then a couple of minutes, it would attempt to enter a power save mode (which would abruptly shutdown my computer). I ended up replacing the battery and then properly training it. I have not had a problem since.

I've been watching this thread for a while. Well, I threw myself on the mercy of the Genius bar. Even though my two batteries are out of warranty, the genius ran a test that confirmed that the batteries were quite dead with unusually low cycle counts. So I left the Apple store with two new batteries. I had been stalling since I knew they were out of warranty anyway and didn't want to spend the money.

If you have access to an Apple store, it might be worth a try.
