Magic Mouse keeps disconnecting from bluetooth

My magic mouse (with all updates properly installed and with USB Overdrive properly uninstalled) has a problem connecting and disconnecting from the computer. When I use the mouse for a few minutes, it will all of a sudden be non-responsive, and within a couple of seconds the "Connection Lost" message appears on the screen. If I wait another minute, and click the mouse button a few times, the mouse will reconnect. This happens periodically as I am using the computer.

In the console logs, I get these messages:

10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::willTerminate] entered
10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::stop] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::init][30] init is complete
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::handleStart][30] Done
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [08701100][AppleMultitouchHIDEventDriver::start] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [09f11680][AppleMultitouchDevice::start] entered

The first message is when the mouse disconnects, and the rest are when it reconnects.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try this. might help

  1. From the OS X desktop, hold down the Shift+Option keys and then click on the Bluetooth menu item to reveal the hidden Debug menu
  2. Select “Reset the Bluetooth module” from the Debug menu listUser uploaded file

3. When finished resetting, reboot the Mac as usual and go through the process of connecting the Bluetooth device(s) to the Mac as you typically would, everything should now work fine. (If you have another set of keyboard and mouse reset all connected apple devices and restart.)

Hope this will help.

***Thanks to our friend Keir over at MacKungFu for discovering the debug menu item ***

I can't believe this thread goes on for over three years. Some of the suggested fixes are also really impressive. WiFi interference can be an issue with Bluetooth. I've only ever seen this in really crowded environments (e.g. conference or trade show) with WiFis going on by the hundreds. The symptom of that is consistently no Bluetooth connection at all. So that can't really be the cause of that many problems as described on this thread.

For me, the design of the battery compartment was the sole issue. Anything that can be caused or remedied by rattling stuff almost certainly is a mechanical issue, and can not be fixed by installing software. I did two things:

  1. I put little pads made from repeatedly folded aluminium foil into the two holes for the battery prongs. Reason being that the prongs on the rechargeables I was using were just that little bit too short. Without these pads, the batteries would not make any contact at all.
  2. As the prongs now juuust about make contact, but moving the mouse around, or tapping it onto the desk would still cause a movement of the batteries and interrupt the contact. So I folded a little piece of paper, and put it between the battery cover and the batteries to increase the pressure and keep them in place.

With these two measures, I get a stable connection.

Been having these disconnect issues for some time - since I started using Eveready brand, in fact. Switched to Energizer Max, basically +ve terminal is flat vs pointed in the Eveready - much more solid connection since. What a funny quirk. They didn't sell Apple Rechargeable batteries in the premium reseller I went to, otherwise would try that.

All this discussion about the batteries or battery cover being loose or using different kinds of batteries that are slightly larger or smaller seems unlikely to be the issue, guys. I mean, sure the PalmPre phone did a comically bad job at retaining batteries well enough to prevent power interruption, but APPLE? Hmm...this would be a class-action lawsuit by now, wouldn't it?

More likely, it's one of the issues described by the following two articles:

This thread talks about using a piece of paper or cardboard between the battery door and the batteries to prevent the disconnect from occurring however, I've found that there is a simpler, more permanent solution. I scratched the battery contacts and battery ends with a small file. Nothing major, just some little scratch marks to help with the electrical contacts. Voila! No more disconnects!

ALL of the 'solutions' listed are work arounds and not solutions. Some work for a while giving false hope of reliability. For as much as APPLE charges for Macbook Pros and Magic Mouses, I EXPECT A LITTLE BETTER QUALITY AND RELIABILITY THEN WHAT THEY ARE GIVING! I even bought another mouse only to be disappointed on day one. Unless they address this issue with an engineering fix, I may go to Linux on my next CPU. I'm using the recommended lithium batteries and have tried different brands.

Hi all, after reading this log, I decided it was a battery connection problem. I had some blank cards one might use to learn vocabulary (3 1/2 " x l 1/2 " ). I took out the batteries, placed the card across the center area, replaced the batteries and wrapped the remaining card around the top of the batteries. Then I replaced the cover. Voilá NO DISCONNECTS.

What did not work for me were the bluetooth/airdrop approach, rebooting, cleaning contacts, changing batteries, deleting bluetooth from Networks.

What seems to have done the trick was to fold a post-it and stick it between batteries and the cover (so the batteries can't move).

It's worth a try if you're desperate.
