Magic Mouse keeps disconnecting from bluetooth

My magic mouse (with all updates properly installed and with USB Overdrive properly uninstalled) has a problem connecting and disconnecting from the computer. When I use the mouse for a few minutes, it will all of a sudden be non-responsive, and within a couple of seconds the "Connection Lost" message appears on the screen. If I wait another minute, and click the mouse button a few times, the mouse will reconnect. This happens periodically as I am using the computer.

In the console logs, I get these messages:

10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::willTerminate] entered
10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::stop] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::init][30] init is complete
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::handleStart][30] Done
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [08701100][AppleMultitouchHIDEventDriver::start] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [09f11680][AppleMultitouchDevice::start] entered

The first message is when the mouse disconnects, and the rest are when it reconnects.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try this. might help

  1. From the OS X desktop, hold down the Shift+Option keys and then click on the Bluetooth menu item to reveal the hidden Debug menu
  2. Select “Reset the Bluetooth module” from the Debug menu listUser uploaded file

3. When finished resetting, reboot the Mac as usual and go through the process of connecting the Bluetooth device(s) to the Mac as you typically would, everything should now work fine. (If you have another set of keyboard and mouse reset all connected apple devices and restart.)

Hope this will help.

***Thanks to our friend Keir over at MacKungFu for discovering the debug menu item ***

Dude - this is TOTALLY works.....just clean the little aluminum censors. Problem all gone - thanks Cojcolds and all other who mentioned cleaning the sensors inside the MM housing. What a waste of precious design time. So happy this is fixed - been dealing with this off and on for a few years now and finally got tires and looked it up on line - even bought new MM's to resolve the problem. THIS WORKS.

what about those of us with an MM2 without a battery casing? I have tried 2 mice and they still sporadically disconnect & reconnect for no apparent reason.

Then look for 2.4GHz radio interference. Bluetooth uses 2.4GHz.

  • An over saturation of 2.4GHz WiFi base stations (apartment/condo complex)
  • Microwave oven (2.4GHz is the frequency that vibrates water, which is why no commercial radio service wants it, as rain, humidity, fog, etc... will interfere with long range communications, so the FCC gave it over to low power unlicensed spectrum). So a Microwave oven that is leaking radio waves could interfere with 2.4GHz radios
  • Poorly shielded USB3 device or poorly shielded USB3 cable <https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/universal-serial-bus/usb3-frequen cy-interference-paper.html>
  • 2.4GHz cordless phones (could be a nearby neighbor)
  • 2.4GHz baby monitors (could be a nearby neighbor)
  • Something wrong with your Mac's Bluetooth antenna
  • Your own Mac WiFi (for example if you use 2.4GHz WiFi, and not 5GHz). Less likely, but not unheard of.
  • An interference list from Apple <Potential sources of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interference - Apple Support>
  • You can Google: "Mac Bluetooth interference" and most likely get some other ideas
