27 inch imac problems universal?

Is every single new imac having the performance issues that keep being posted? Is there anyone that has received a new imac 27incher that has done thorough testing and has not encountered any problems? My fear is that this may be hardware based, so I canceled my order. If reinstalling a clean copy of Snow Leopard does not fix this issue (as it has not for many) that pretty much leaves only hardware and firmware as possible culprits. If its firmware, then everyone is in luck. If it is hardware... well that is why I canceled my order. I just did not want to deal with that.

So,anyways, back to my first question: Is this problem universal?

Cheers! & Thanx!

No. Obviously not. If every 27-inch iMac had problems, Apple Discussions would have tens of thousands of new topic posts in this category. Actually, Apple's servers would have crashed before that happened.

And if you look at some of the replies to the existing topics, you will actually see some people taking the time to log in and post that their iMac has no problems. But since most customers would not bother to post that their iMac is working great and they are happy, for every problem post you read, you have no idea how many people (100, 1000, 10,000) are having no issues.

So I think your odds for a positive experience would have been very very good.

I went to the Apple store last night to see the reported flash video problems for myself as I am interested in buying a new iMac. I ran a flash video movie trailer from Hulu and observed the activity monitor on 5 new iMacs, 4 (21.5- inch) and one 27 inch. The results were 2 of the 21.5 inch models ran perfectly with the flash player cpu 50 to 60%. The other two 21.5-inch models and the 27 were as reported, choppy video and sound with the cpu over 105% and higher.
Cnet news has reported the same results in their lab test. ( http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10387590-1.html?tag=mncol)
So for now it looks to me like a roll of the dice as to weather I'll be lucky to get a computer without this problem. I think I'll wait but I hope this is resolved soon.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but my 27" imac that I have now had for 1 week is definitely having some performance issues. It has the flash based issues like many others, but other than that, it can become extremely slow and glitchy (?) with almost no programs running. I will come home from work, my imac having been sleeping all day running no programs or anything, and when I get on it everything is just so slow, hesitant, and glitchy. It is extremely frustrating especially when I have a much less spec advanced Apple laptop that far outperforms my imac. Every time I come home I have to restart my imac to get it to run decently (then give it a few hours and it goes back to slow). I have been checking up these discussion forms every day for remedies (resetting the p-ram and a couple other different things), but none of them seemed to work. Everything is still slow and disappointing. The only reason I have not returned it is because I'm waiting for the next snow leopard update (which should be coming out relatively soon) to see if that will fix my problems. If not, then it will be returned or if I feel up to it, exchanged.

I wonder if the quad core with the ATI Radeon 4850 will have the same issue. I'm thinking of buying that configuration late November or early December.

If this problem is as wide spread as some sites are implying, it's very disappointing that these issues made it through Apple's test cycle.

I will make it a point to stress test a quad core display unit before I actually buy.

hi all,

I'm on my second 27" imac.

The first one was flickering so badly after just one day that i returned to the Apple store in Cardiff and the guy on the desk said as the manager had noticed flickering on one of the display models he would replace it.

I have had the replacement for 3 days now and today it's flickering bands accross the top and bottom of the screen. It also slows up and is glitchy and I have to re-start. On re-start it now claims that my internet connection is not available and to re-enter my password.

This is the 3rd mac I have owned and never had problems before, very disappointed. will a software update really sort this out or should i be getting a refund before my 14 days are up?

Thanks for all the responses. After further consideration I have decided to re-order the 27 inch quad imac. I run a hardwired connection and use wireless occasionally ( usually for airport extreme maintenance & occasionally airport express usage).

From what I have gathered the issue regarding the ATI graphics card will be solved with a firmware update. The problem is not universal and temporary fixes do exist.

I am no longer an unhappy camper. My second computer seems to be working fine now. More than two hours on the phone with apple care we found a couple of software issues. The main one was probably due to my Epson R280 software conflicting, trashing the drivers and installing fresh from their website fixed it.

Earlier in these messages someone mentioned that people often only post when there are problems, which is very true. I'm not sure I would have even thought about posting back my solution without that comment.

happy again

I bought my 27" iMac a few days after it was released and I am one of those experiencing the "slowing down of the HD" issue.

I do a postcast once a week that I've been doing for 4+ years now and the first podcast I recorded on my new iMac stopped recording about 30 minutes in. I got the Disk to slow error. After rebooting and continuing the recording from the point where it stopped previously, GarageBand stopped a number of times on me with the same error message. At the end of the day, the podcast was never released because the parts that were recorded sounded like crap.

I know about the Flash issue but this happens every time I record in GarageBand after a fresh reboot where I don't launch anything but GarageBand.

I guess until Apple acknowledges this as a ligit issue and releases a fix, I'll be relegated to recording my shows on my MacBook. I still have my 24" iMac that I used to use to record with which is now in the family room... never had any problems with that one and both are configured exactly the same way.

I've had many Macs in the past 9 years... I sold my Dual G5 and my MacBook Pro 17" to buy this iMac and I'm very dissapointed. And I'm not usually the type to complain... I just want my new computer to work properly. I still have a Mac Mini, 13" MacBook, and 24" iMac but it pains me to see my new iMac not being able to do what I could do on my old G5.

I hope Apple is taking this seriously.

FOLLOWUP Nov. 24, 2009

Hi, I know this is an older thread that's already been "answered" but, just like I have, someone else may stumble on it that's interested in buying a new iMac. That being said, I'm hoping some of the people that previously posted complaints about their new iMacs might pick up on the thread again. So, thanks in advance... Are any of you still having problems with your new iMacs?

This is my first Mac, and I was getting worried after reading the discussions before it came, I've had it since last Wednesday and so far no problems at all.

The screen is fine with NO dead or hot pixels, it's nice and quite, does not get hot.

Hopefully it will stay perfect 🙂 and yes as a new 27" i7 user I would recommend one to a friend.

If I honest I'm not keen on the magic mouse and some of the keys are not in the same place as on my winxp machine, but they are not faults, just things to get use to.

Hi there, I received my new Imac 27" i7 yesterday. I was very happy at first as I could not find any dead pixels however when I used my Isight camera I was very upset. I found a total of 19 dead + stuck pixels in the isight camera making it really unusable, I was shocked with this. How is it possible for there to be so many? Has anyone else checked their isight cameras? If you put a black cloth over it or if you are wearing a black top you will be able to see them much better. This is my first post so I'm sorry if I am taking over someone's thread.
