Yellow tinge from bottom to top of the screen, 27" iMac

My 27" is showing a yellow tinge when viewing on the bottom of the screen compared to the top?
This makes color corrections on my photos impossible. Anyone else has this problem? You can easily
see it on white or grey background (even in finder windows)

Hi Dino1956,
Maybe I found a (almost) perfect screen!
I remembered some posts on Macrumors.com and I found this one:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=9282640&highlight=#post9282640

This screen looks pretty good to me and using the Colormeter from the Apple utilities it looks like the colors are consistent.

Of course, this is only one, and I'v seen a lot of pictures of yellow tinged screens.

Thanks Lexvo,

can you see it from all the pictures I posted, or is there one that shows it more?

Would you say it's in line with the issue other people have?

When I go back to the store, cause I am going back, should I try and ask for a specific production week?
Mine is a week 5...

The first three and the last one show it very good. It is in line with the problems of other people and your yellow tinge it quite pronounced I would say.

I'm afraid the production week won't matter, because even week 8 iMacs are reported to have the yellow tinge.

The best option would be to unpack the new iMac in the store and inspect if it has the yellow tinge (or other problems).

My iMac i5 also has yellow tinge (less then yours by the way) and I decided to wait until there's an official statement from Apple.

@Lexvo
Where did you buy your iMac? Apple store?
I only have one week to return it, as i bought it at an apple premium reseller and not at the apple store...
hence, if my first replacement is not 100% alright, I will have to go though their repair centre, and wait who knows how long...
and it does seem that even after having the screen replaced, many people report that the issue did not disappear

I am very puzzled...

If this was a present a could surely live with it - but having spent over 1000euros I feel like the product should be flawless...

PS should I only delete my personal data such as pics and docs before returning it, or should I format it?

I packed my i5 to the store yesterday (in Michigan, US). I was actually quite surprised I didn't see as much yellow in their store lighting. I like to work in a dim room and frankly I only see it when I have the gray strips out, or using Firefox in almost full screen mode (which I don't do on a daily basis). My yellow tinge is on the bottom right and the extreme right near the frame edge.

Anyway, at the store, since I was within my 14 days, he said he would give me a new one if I wanted to as I showed him a photo of the screen I took which was clearly showing 2 different shades of gray. But then if the new one is worse, I can't get my existing one back and will have to keep swapping.

In the end, I decided to keep mine as most screens I suspect will have some degree of yellow tinge. I didn't think mine was that bad and didn't want to go through the hassle of setting up the Mac again.

I also have a 3 year Applecare. So, a year or 2-3 years from now if it is fixed, I can still bring it in and have them replace the LCD.

Interesting thing though, my iMac i5 is assembled in US when I thought they were all assembled in China. Also, the LCD replacement is done in house at the local Apple store. Some things I wasn't aware of.

I know most people are saying this shouldn't happen in a $2k machine. Well, I know Dell sells the same IPS LED (with more inputs but not as attractive frame) for $1200. So, if you get the C2D, it is more like you are paying $600 for the computer part.

You can always buy the Dell monitor (I'm sure their service is excellent 😉 and then pick up the Mac Mini. It'll come to the same price point ($1800).

I bought my iMac online from Apple in november. I discovered the yellow tinge when I was out of the return period of 14 days. But I have AppleCare so I think I can have my iMac repaired at some point in the future.

If you don't need a computer right now, you can also ask for a refund and wait until Apple solves the problem definitely.

You can safely empty the Trashcan (right-klick and then use command) to remove files.

thanks for your comment - it helps me realize I am not just acting crazy over a non existing problem.

Even writing on this mainly white page, i can see a yellow halo on the bottom right...

Check these out, it's pics I took of the desktop, setting a solid white colour as a background:

Hi Renzo,

Sorry for being a bit sarcastic in my post but after seeing many cases of yellowing in this forum that was a very obvious case.

As you said, it's even obvious when having a white background(not even using the grey bar test). That's definitely a proof of the defect. In many cases you can notice the yellowing with the grey bar test only.

You should be able to get a refund from any Apple product no matter your location. However, there's been some news about a possible fix for it by Apple(apparently), so I would call Apple or the reseller to see what can you do(send them your picts), remember you've got a guarantee! 🙂

Good luck!

Just saw that Gizmodo report. Apparently Apple has officially fessed up to the issue:

"We've addressed the issues that caused display flickering and yellow tint. Customers concerned that their iMac is affected should contact AppleCare."

What's the source of Gizmodo's report?
What's AppleCare's solution?
Should we be happy now???
