Yellow tinge from bottom to top of the screen, 27" iMac

My 27" is showing a yellow tinge when viewing on the bottom of the screen compared to the top?
This makes color corrections on my photos impossible. Anyone else has this problem? You can easily
see it on white or grey background (even in finder windows)

iMac 27" 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

Guesses, all of this. My hunch, based on what we've seen here is that the bad screen rate has probably gone from the 5% range down to the sub-1% range since the display panel part was changed and Apple announced they had "addressed" the problem. But I also suspect that Apple's definition of a bad screen has more to do with yellow blotches and discoloration stripes than it does with grey bar constancy from top to bottom.

What do other posters think about my math and guesstimates?


Nice try but, with all due respect, your figures are totally meaningless. Your calculations and, at best, guestimates make any calculation completely without foundation.

I'm happy for you to have fully solved the issue, but you should realize that you got a pretty special treatment and this doesn't prove the general problem has been solved.

Imagine that, last time I spoke to my rep here in Italy (I was asking for the 3rd replacement) he denied having ever heard about yellow screens at all! (at least as far as 21.5" models are concerned).

Maybe you could help other readers by posting the repair number of the new screen so that they can ask for the same replacement you had.

Moreover, if you have a bit of time and a digital camera, why don't you post a picture of your screen displaying the grey bars test on http://imac.squeaked.com/ ?

That would show that a better iMac is possible!

Ptharrison109, I like your logic train. I suspect you are reasonably accurate down to the estimate of the problem rate. However, there is little basis for how you expanded the incident report rates at imac.squeaked to the whole population to arrive at a 10% problem rate. It could easily be 20% or 30% or more. However, even if the problem rate is 50%, you still arrive at a joint probabilility of getting 3 yellows in a row of only 12.5%? We have posters who are up to 4 or 5!? So what do we conclude from the math? That Apple Discussions posters are snake bitten? I suspect only the passage of time and the accumulation of more data will suggest a more accurate answer. Hopefully, by then we are at revision A and the problem has been corrected sometime later this year.

Yes, I know a better way to save my screen problem after 6 times of returning iMac. It takes long time for me to doing my work with new iMac.

1. call "official customer care" that you have screen problem and ask for a repair number.
2. finding out your local tech office, contact with and give them this repair number, ( I suggest to send your iMac to the tech office, not reseller)

thanks for taking the time to make the pictures of your screen and post them.

I'm a bit embarrassed, though, because I have to say that in my opinion your repaired screen looks just as many others here (except the really serious ones): with a yellow tinge in its lower part.

To prove what I'm saying, I've just taken your image, copied the lower bar and pasted it underneath the higher one to show how different they are while they should be exactly the same shade of grey.
(I also cropped the picture to eliminate the dark borders on my little 21.5" screen .... 😉 )

I don't mean you have to trash your iMac, of course; if you're happy with it, that's OK, it's your machine. (After all, I'm also keeping mine while I could have accepted a refund)

But please don't say that this is a "problem free, pure color screen" unless you want to help Apple to replace their infamous "Ultimate Display" motto ...

Paolo you are right ....however I must say that this screen is one of the best I have seen so far on this thread, very similar to mine week 8 (which I have decided to keep).

If I were you I would send it back. Don't opt for the replacement LCD! I took mine to the local authorized repair center and had the LCD replaced for the same reason. Now the yellow is gone, but grays are white and blacks are grey. The colors seem washed out. I've tried to calibrate the screen and adjust the contrast with no improvement. I called apple care again, and they are telling me that it's normal. At this point I want to send it in to apple for them to look at it. The repair center I took it to forgot to tighten up the screws that hold the LCD in place. The glass panel on the front wasn't seated properly. If they couldn't tighten a few screws what else did they do wrong? I made apple care aware of this as well, and can you believe they wanted me to take it back to that place. Unfortunately, there isn't an apple store within 100 miles. Somebody please help?

I am wonder that after many times of return and they finally gave me a better screen, although it's a little improvement out of the low quality produce.

And I agree that Apple should take off the words "Ultimate Display" from their advertisement, It makes much people unhappy and disappoint for it!

The new one is worse. Apple boosted the luminosity (in the profile) of the 3rd one.

No hope... I think I will keep it like this...
