Yellow tinge from bottom to top of the screen, 27" iMac

My 27" is showing a yellow tinge when viewing on the bottom of the screen compared to the top?
This makes color corrections on my photos impossible. Anyone else has this problem? You can easily
see it on white or grey background (even in finder windows)

Mine (iMac 27" i7 delivered last Tuesday after 4 weeks of waiting / Switzerland) has the same issues with the yellowish tint at the bottom third of the screen. I just called Apple in order to return it. The lady on the hotline told me that other people have already returned their iMac because of this problem. First, she wanted to send me a replacement unit but since the chances were high that I could get one with the same issue again I declined and went for the return. I'll wait for Apple to handle their quality problems with the new iMac before I will buy another one....

I, too, have the yellowish tint on my (i7) 27" iMac screen toward the bottom of the display. I'm going to be calling Apple soon to demand a replacement (a $2000+ computer shouldn't be having these issues).

A question, though, for those that have asked for a replacement: will Apple ship you a new machine without receiving your defective one first? I do use my new machine at my place of work for some intensive work and would be seriously hampered by not having the computer. I'd like to get a machine with a good display but not at the expense of my work (I'd rather just deal with the yellowish tint until things calm down a bit). I'd also like to ensure that the new machine has a good display before going through the hassle of getting everything transferred over to the new computer.

So, any input here from those that have had an issue like this in the past with an iMac?

Apple UK are replacing mine. Fingers crossed the replacement is a good one.

It was shipped the same day I called them for delivery on Monday - really good service. I'll receive the new one before the courier calls to arrange a suitable collection time for the old 🙂

With the 27", I'd imagine there could be a period where you may be computerless due to the current shipping time on a 27"...?

Seems like Apple can't build an iMac with a perfect display. I had a 24" white Intel iMac that had an uneven display. Apple replaced the LCD 3 times and the logic board twice before replacing it with the latest aluminum iMac last March. The issue is still there but, no where as bad as what I'm seeing on the 27".
It is what it is. I guess you can't pack all that hardware into such a slim design without it having an effect on the display.

Well, after several sleepless nights, I cancelled my I7 order. I really wanted it, but man - logic finally prevailed and I decided to wait at least 3 months to see if all of these problems are addressed and resolved. I've been an Apple Patriot since the Apple IIe (early 80's) and have been through many Apple products through the years and converted many people from Windows to Mac. Hopefully this is a temporary anomaly for Apple (albeit it's going to be very expensive to work through) and be back on the purchase wagon soon.

How does the screen on the 27-inch iMac compare with the 24-inch and 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display? Do the Apple Cinema displays also have a yellow tinge?

The reason I ask is because I believe that the 27-inch iMac and both of the Apple Cinema HD Displays use White LED's while more expensive monitors use RGB LED's.

If the Apple Cinema displays have the same yellow tinge then perhaps it is "normal". On the other hand if they do not have a yellow tinge then it is logical to assume that something is wrong with the 27-inch iMac display.

Here is a quote from the following Wikipedia article

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlight

LED backlighting in color screens comes in two flavours: white LED backlights and RGB LED backlights[1]. White LEDs are used most often in notebooks and desktop screens, and in virtually all mobile LCD screens. A white LED is actually a blue LED with yellow phosphor to give the impression of white light. The spectral curve has big gaps in the green and red parts. RGB LEDs consist of a red, a blue, and a green LED and can be controlled to produce different temperatures of white. RGB LEDs for backlighting are found in high end colour proofing displays such as HP DreamColor LP2480zx monitor or selected HP 8730w notebooks, as well as newer consumer grade displays such as Dell's Studio series laptops which have an optional RGB LED display. The LED Apple Cinema Display for example uses white LEDs.

My 27in. i7 had the color temperature variation as well. Sent it back Monday. Replacement is expected to ship next week.

The yellow tinge/warmer color was very visible on a white or gray background.

The apple tech I talked with indicated that he had heard of others with the problem.

I'm very much hoping my replacement machine will be okay.

I have only ever noticed the "Yellow tinge" in the lower-right hand corner of the screen upon the first day's bootup on the gray boot screen. Looking at it now with a white canvass, I see no color temperature issues (or maybe a tiny blotch but I can't say whether or not if that's just some biological issue of my eyes). So on my system it seems to fade away very quickly over time. I don't have any problem with that behavior. If the tint is actually still there then my color acuity makes it a non-issue. Some may be more sensitive to it than others.

It is the first time I've been an early adapter of anything but I'm still incredibly happy with my iMac. I'm a first time Apple-user and was simply so ripe for a new computer that I jumped on this.

I figure with AppleCare if the display decides to go nuts one day, I'm covered. Sorry that some of you are having excessive tinting and flicker issues.

Ugh! From one issue to the next... I'm on my 2nd iMac, after dealing with the flickering issue with an iMac from the 941 batch, I returned it today to hopefully find a new healthy replacement. This iMac, from the 947 batches hasn't shown any flickering issues, but it does have the yellow tint, something the other didn't have. I first noticed a "dirty" mark in the center of the screen and then noticed the yellow. Funny thing, when you bring up the levels in a photo of the screen... it kind of looks like a xerox of someone's backend. Maybe it's Apple being funny. Hmm.
