Yellow tinge from bottom to top of the screen, 27" iMac

My 27" is showing a yellow tinge when viewing on the bottom of the screen compared to the top?
This makes color corrections on my photos impossible. Anyone else has this problem? You can easily
see it on white or grey background (even in finder windows)

I've had my iMac for about 3 weeks now and didn't notice the yellow tinge until just recently. I was looking at a white website full height of the screen and did a quick google search to find this thread.

It sounds like the tinge varies. I'm on the fence whether to get a replacement unit. Mine doesn't seem bad, but it is there. I'm also too busy until January to deal with it.

Does the replacement have to be rquested within a specific amount of days after purchase? I would think getting it replaced later there might be a better chance of the replacement unit actually not having the issue. Or like someone pointed out with different LED technologies, will it always be there to some extent?

I contacted Apple support yesterday to see what they would have me do with the machine -- they said that they would like to have me bring it in for repair, which I suppose I will do once the holiday passes.

I'm not certain whether it's worth it to request a new machine (is Apple even that forthcoming with sending out a brand new machine in cases like these?) as I'm fairly confident that this problem is present in just about every 27" iMac. I'd love to hear from someone that received a new machine (or had theirs in for service) and had this problem corrected.

Hey, not sure what to tell you about timing. In dealing with Apple thus far, they have been really great in trying to help fix the issues and replacing my machines. It's probably best that you bring this to Apple's notice and create an Apple Expert Case number with them. You can do this via apple.com and set up a time for them to call you. As for waiting till Jan... you really may want to pass that by Apple. And is it an LED issue? Not sure, since some people aren't seeing the problem and I didn't notice it on my first iMac, I don't think it's a problem with them all.

This is a good link to test your screen for the warmer tones: http://tapplox.com/imac-led.html

Good luck.

Totally with you about not noticing right away. I didn't notice until I read about the problem, thanks me. But when looking at full height white or the grey bar test (please don't delete that link), it is obvious.

Apple support told me that in the US you have 14 days from time of purchase at the store or from delivery to request a replacement, after that it is a free repair at a local Apple store under warranty during the 1st year assuming they approve it, not sure how that works. The repair at the store should take 3-5 days after the parts arrive. Applecare buyers can get an in-home service and repair visit to replace the screen or whatever is needed.

I used the Display preference setup in expert mode to make adjustments and set the white point closer to 7300 which is more blue than yellow and it helped. There is still a difference from top to bottom. I don't do color work though so your mileage may vary.

I am also having this issue on 21.5"
Does anybody know if this can be fixed through software update? Looks like the yellow tint changes if you use a different color panel.

This is the second iMac and has the issue, as the first one did. Will they replace it again if I send it back let's say, after a month of purchase? I don't want to send it back now and get one with the same problem.

Here's the Canadian Apple Online Store policy. Not sure how you purchased your new iMac.

Return and Refund Policy

Well, I have a 27 inch Imac that clearly has the yellow tinge and has been slowly getting worse. Like the machine but can't use it for what I need. Apple tech guy had no hesitation in confirming to the retailler a replacement was needed.

But, 2 weeks on and I am still waiting for one to arrive. Seem to be out of stock. I hope this is because Apple has pulled the batches to solve the problem. It leaves me concerned that in time the next machine develops the fault even if it not there to start.

What would be more re-assuring is if someone could identify the cause

Mine had the yellow tinge problem plus that grey bar near the dock. The grey bar looked like a pattern that the electronics behind the screen could produce (something like an x-ray picture of the electronics behind the screen). Could it be that i.e. the electromagnetic field of some of the parts have an effect on the display? All the electronics is cramped behind that huge display...I wouldn't wonder if that had some impact....

Hi. I have received my iMac 27" 10 days ago and I have found this thread and checked the issue. I can say the problem is there. I am really disappointed. I will contact Apple Store but I don't know if a replacement will solve the yellow tint. I can even say if Apple is going to be agree with sending me another machine. How can I know in which batch number my iMac has?

Thanks.

julen,

The 3rd and 4th figures of the serial number tell the production week. Thus serial W8947XXXX was made in week (batch) 47.

I too have the yellow tinge problem. I called Apple support and, after a couple of routine tests to discard a software cause, they offered to exchange it with no problem.
