Actually the 1.5V batteries, being non rechargable, are turning out to be an expensive workaround. I am back to square one.
the tissue-on-top-of-the-batteries method worked automatically! thanks!
Where did you place tissues. I'm using stiff card resting across both batteries. Tissues sound a litte on the thin side sound
On top of the batteries. Between the batteries and the cover. I folded the tissue twice or thrice to make it a bit thicker.

I repaired the mouse and now seems to be working fine!

As this thread is concerning Mac Os X v10.6 Snow Leopard I wanted to say that this seems to work for Mac OS X v10.7 Lion, too.

This shows the black plastic bulkhead the + terminal needs to penetrate to make contact.
