Perhaps another frustrating element to this problem is Apple's typical lack of respose or acknowledgement. We're left guessing if all of us are experiencing the same issue or not. Yes, we're having disconnect problems with yet another one of Apple's questionable mouse-products. However, the variety of "solutions" people have confidently found suggests Apple has more than one technical problem. If Apple isn't taking it "seriously enough" as it were... it's Apple who should be held accountable. Not other users trying to pinch-hit for technical support.
This part of your post sums up so well my frustration with Apple. I have taken the liberty of completing a feedback form to Apple which includes (anonymously in your case) your above text. But does Apple care?
Suffice to say, there is a problem with the "Magic" part of the device. I've resorted to connecting a wire between the mouse and the computer. Oh yeah. A wired mouse. I actually HAD to connect a wired mouse to the iMac because I threw the "Magic" Mouse out into the back yard. Other than the squirrels occassionally moving the MagicMouse while rooting for acorns and making my on-screen mouse go nutty, I've had no issues.
The started only recently on my late 2010 iMac with MM. The MM has been running on rechargeables since the originals wore out. I found a solution to my frustrations. After replacing batteries are repairing permissions more than once in a day, I say "phuque it", plug in the old USB mouse and keep working.
I read through this and many similar thread. Tried all.
ONLY ONE SOLUTION HAVE BEEN SUBSTANTIAL: I should NOT have my Iphone with Buletooth switched on CLOSE to my macbook and magic miuse. The Bluetooth will produce interferences.
So the Magic Maouse is fantastic, don't go back to USB.
Just switch off any ther bluetooth device.
Thanks to the good guy that somewher in this thread has pointed out the only one, simple, not occult solution.
After all is alla bout...magic!
Luckily, my bluetooth device for my phone broke so I haven't been able to use it for several months and lo and behold, when I think back, mouse problems ended right about the same time. Same batteries. No slips of paper. Works like a charm, er, magic!
However, it would be awfully nice to be able to have both - bluetooth AND a magic mouse. I mean, if we can put a man on the moon, maybe there will be a fix...soon?
FWIW, in the spirit of covering different bases/causes
Although I've "solved" my problem 100% for several months now with the paper inserts to snug the batteries in. I had no luck with the bluetooth-possible-fix (obviously my issue resolved in a different manner).
I have and iPhone 3 (now iPod) and an iPhone 4 sitting on my desk pretty much all the time I'm at my MBP within 12 inches - so I suppose I would have been a good candidate for intereference, not to mention a Voyager BT earpiece about 2 feet away as well.
Anyway, just throwing variables out in case someone is connecting any dots.
I have had the same problem with the MM for the last 4 months, however; I tried tweeking the battery back against the spring but only enough to take the pressure of slightly, the mouse lost connection instantly! I tried this a few times movement was so slight that you could not see the battery move, it lost connection every time.
I looked at the contacts and could see that the shine of the contact was very dull on at least three of the contacts so I cleaned them using all I had in the house and that was printer head cleaner, it worked and I have not lost contact for a week now instead of every half hour.
It proved to me that it was a contact problem and I suspect cheap batteries don't help, to my mind only the batteries could cause the dulling of the metal, anyway it worked for me and may be worth a try with yours, another idea may be to place a piece of squashed kitchen foil between the battery and the mouse + contact.
I'm using the Magic Mouse with a 27" iMac (2010).
I was having the same problems everyone else described. Tried deleting the plist and "favoriting" the mouse in Bluetooth, but that did not work.
What I noticed was that while the disconnection was happening often, it was also sporadic. However, EVERYTIME I lifted the mouse from the surface, it disconnected. Never failed.
So I tried theforeendy's method, putting a slip of aluminum foil in between the two batteries and mashing it down with the cover. I am now able to lift the mouse, place it back down, and have not had any disconnections since.
I'll add another comment if the problem returns. But for now this seems to be the solution.
Thanks everyone.
My son recently dropped my MM on the cold, hard floor. NOW I have connectivity issues where as before I did not experience them so much. They were present before the crash, but now it's super annoying. I tried the PREFlist move, but losses persist. The batteries I use now are undeniably not as snug as the ones from the factory, but the ends are still touching all the appropriate places. My keyboard and trackpad rarely ever loose connection.
May the force be with us. Mad props to those who have fixed their problems.
I have still not suffered any lost contact with my magic mouse, since cleaning the contacts, see above.
It would appear that batteries do give off a corrosive gas when they are dying or dead, I have a feeling that Apple's coating on the contacts of the mouse are being attacked by this gas, I for one will only use high quality batteries from now on. Cheap batteries expand when they are dying, they will still show a charge but are giving off their gas while you are using your mouse.
Let me know if it works for you.
Thanks a lot
I took out my (standard store bought) batteries, wiped them down as well as the inside connectors. Seems to be fine now. No connectivity issues in the last day or two. Guess there are many issues, some more forgiveable than others.
Stay strong everyone!
Ok!
This happened to me just the last three days. Have a 27inch Mac. .. I put it on my kitchen counter as we'd just moved house and my desk isn't set up.
Mouse has been fine for weeks in this position.
Then, day before yesterday, the pointer was freezing and alternately jumping about. Then it started connecting and disconnecting this morning.
I turned my Mac off overnight, reset the PRAM, removed the scripts, reset the batteries in the mouse, put little pads of foil in between the batteries and contacts, padded the thing with paper... basically if there's a suggested solution to this, I've done it. And I mean EVERYTHING. My computer has had so much maintenance it loves me. 😀
Then I moved my computer another foot down the kitchen bench away from the plugs and phone and modem and guess what... problem fixed.
Suspect this is part interferance, part software, part hardware problem... but all I know is that my computer, which ran fine in one position suddenly became intollerant of that position. Who knows why but I'm happy to report all is well.
Thanks to everyone who's submitted theories and fixes here. I tried every single one.
You're all awesome. 😍
For what it's worth, I've had this same issue since buying a new imac and mmouse late last year.
Based on previous posts I checked the overall length of batteries that seem to work and those that give me trouble and believe it or not, the batteries that worked were slightly (less than a mm) longer than the ones that gave me trouble.
I found that a small pad of kitchen tin foil (as previously mentioned) did the trick perfectly!
Now just to stop my wifi dropping out!
I'm glad you mentioned your wifi dropping out. I've been having a terrible time with that since getting my new iMac with the Magic Mouse, et al. Now I'm wondering if the two problems are related. Just to throw a little more into the mix, I'm also having to force quit and relaunch Photoshop, Illustrator and inDesign dozens of times a day. Not sure if any of these have anything to do with one another, but the wifi thing...that one, maybe?
Anyone else care to weigh in on this or a similar combo of problems?
I did, actually, have mouse and wifi problems. I had to get my iMac on my router's 5GHz setting and after that I had no problems. As for myself, I do not think that my mmouse and wifi issues were related. hope that helps.
