Magic Mouse and Mac Pro Reception Problem

I have a Mac Pro 2009 that is unable to reliably work with the new magic mouse. The connection is spotty and either drops or there is significant lag on screen. The mouse is 3 ft, 7 inches from the front of the computer case so the distance should not be causing the problem.

I've noticed that previous threads have discussed wiring problems with the BT radio, but those appear to be on earlier Pro models. I opened the case and I'm unable to find the BT receiver to even verify if the wiring is correct.

If I use the Magic Mouse under my desk about 2 feet from the case, it does work reliably, but the ergonomics of that setup interferes with my productivity. 🙂

I'd prefer not to purchase an external BT dongle. I am using 10.6.1 and all known updates are installed. I do not have Airport.

The mouse works perfectly on my MacBook Pro.

I've installed the latest BT driver software and the Magic Mouse software.

This really feels like a reception problem on the BT radio in the Mac Pro. Any suggestions welcome.

As I have some experience in ruining computers by opening them and fiddling about inside, I tried Greg's and Scott's cable-switching for my Mac Pro Early 2008. I had to unscrew the bluetooth board from the motherboard to reattach the tiny antenna-cable. Afterwards the sluggish behaviour was gone. Still the mouse lost the bluetooth connection about every 30 minutes, so I tried the bluetooth-favorite trick as suggested by Barry. Now my magic mouse is a pure pleasure. Many thanks to all you helpful contributors.

I did the aforementioned wire switch and it solved the issue with intermittent and jerky behavior with the new Magic Mouse. Dramatic difference. Helps if you have good light and a set of hemostats or needle nosed pliers, but it is not a big deal.

I did have to fish around to find the idle antenna wire - it was hiding behind the circuit board and covered by a loop of wire bundle support.

So... after my Mac Pro 1,1 (2006-7) started working better with the Magic Mouse under 10.6.2 (or for other unknown reasons) it hasn't been quite perfect. It has occasionally (maybe once per day) suffered drop outs which manifests as the mouse pointer seeming to stick. Not as bad as before, but still not perfect and annoying enough to make me look to improve it.

As previously mentioned, the cables inside my Mac Pro around Bluetooth / Wi-Fi didn't appear to be long enough to tackle the cable swapping fix others have had success with. So, I ordered a Bluetooth USB dongle. I got a Zoom 4314 from Amazon.

With it plugged into a USB port on the back of my Cinema display, it appears to be working flawlessly. The Magic Mouse works great with better tracking than before and absolutely no stickiness. The dongle does not appear to interfere with my Mac going to sleep when idle, and wakes up instantly from sleep without problems.

So, any Mac Pro owners still with problems... I can certainly recommend.

FYI, I still don't think the Magic Mouse tracks fast enough (I have dual monitors), and so I am using MouseZoom with the speed set to the maximum 10, which is mostly OK. I'm waiting for the updated USB Overdrive to tweak acceleration etc. Anyway, won't start a whole new discussion here.

I have a less than six month old 15 in Macbook Pro with the configured options of a larger HD + larger ram. I am unable to get this mouse to work successfully with my MBP and I already sold my Logitech VX Nano USB mouse thinking this would work perfectly. When scrolling with my finger it's fast as ever, but moving vertically and horizontally on my screen makes me literally move my mouse more often than I should have to. Please hot fix this soon Apple or sadly the Magic Mouse may have to go back. 😟

Throwing in my proverbial two cents.

The antenna swap-eroo trick worked for me too. THANK you to the God who figured it out.

In my case though, I purchased my first gen 2006 Mac Pro without the Airport card installed. I installed that myself around a year ago. So for me, I had a long wire (with plastic cover) and only two cables with a label (it's possible I dislodged the others when I did the Airport install), #3, and BT.

As it stands right now, the BT cable is dangling, and the LOOOOONG cable (with plastic cover and no label) is connected to my BT card. Everything works well now. Bliss.

...for those of you worried about doing this yourself, don't be. It's super easy. Even my fat, sweaty, fingers managed to accomplish the job.

I received a Magic Mouse as a Christmas present, and upon pairing it with my Early 2007 8-core Mac Pro, I was soon greeted by the same flaky and unresponsive mouse pointer that many of you are seeing.

After a bit of software troubleshooting, I plugged in a D-link USB Bluetooth adapter that I had laying around. With that in place, the Magic Mouse started working properly, and I knew I was confronting a Bluetooth problem.

Some Googling revealed information about the BT-antenna wire issue. Upon inspecting the Bluetooth module in my machine, I discovered that the wire labeled "BT" was indeed connected to my module. I swapped the black "BT" wire with the wire labeled "1", buttoned the machine up, and tried once again to use the the Magic Mouse with the onboard Bluetooth adapter.

I am happy to report that the device is now working properly. If you have an Mac Pro from the 2006-2008 era and you're having trouble with your Magic Mouse, this issue is likely caused by the "BT" wire being connected to the Bluetooth adapter when the "1" wire really should be (for these machines, at least).
