"Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth hardware."

I had the same problem. M2500 from Plantronics worked fine under Panther, then I upgraded to Tiger and it didn't work anymore. The pairing worked, but the device was not recognized in Sound In/Out.

Here is what you need to fix this problem:

Here is what you need to do:

1. In Finder select "Go" from the Finder menu, then select "Go to Folder" and type in the following path: /Developer/Applications/Utilities/Bluetooth/

2. Double click on "Bluetooth Explorer"

3. Select "Utilities -> Show Device Cache"

4. Now you should see a list of devices, and you should also see the M2500. Select M2500 and click on "Delete Selected Devices".

5. Close the Device Cache window and quit out of Bluetooth Explorer.

6. Now click on the "Apple Menu" top left corner and select "System Preferences" and click on the "Bluetooth" icon to bring up the Bluetooth preferences.

7. Select the "M2500 by Plantronics" item in the "Bluetooth Devices:" list and delete it.

8. Now click on the "Device" tab and select "Set Up New Device..." and follow the setup pairing process. (the pairing code is "0000").

- Step 1 should be "Introduction" - click Continue
- Step 2 should be "Select Device Type" - select "Headset" and click on Continue
- Step 3 should be "Bluetooth Headset Set Up" - Now bring your M2500 in pairing mode (turn on headset by pressing and holding the on/off/volume up/volume down button. Once headset is turned on push the volume switch to the up position, hold it and press the talk button by the microphone until the light flashes red and green continuously). Now the M2500 is in pairing mode and you should see the M2500 in the list of discovered headset devices. Select it and click the "Continue" button.
- Step 4 should ask you for the pairing code. Type in "0000" (4 zeros) and press the button to proceed.
- Now the computer should gather additional info and .... voila.... M2500 paired and set up.


Have a look in the Sound - System Preferences panel. You will now see that "M2500 by Plantronics" is usable and selectable in the Output and Input panel.

Now you can set up so that iChat uses your headset for sound in and out.

I've been using a d-link for a few years now. I've done the update to get my Sony Ericsson headset to work. Everything was fine, great even, until I got the plantronics 590A headset. It is supposed to be hifi quality, but the D-Link does not handle high fidelity sound (or Advanced Audio Device Profile/AADP). So, I found the MSI Star Key 3x usb dongle, which is said to be faster, in terms of file transfer, has a longer range (100m compared to 10m with other models) and also has the AADP function. Most of all, it IS mac compatible (it is readily recognized by OS 10.4.5 when plugged in). The problem is that I cannot seem to pair the headset with it. I get the same messages as all of you who have encounterd the same anomaly. I've tried, patiently, to update the firmware: I
1. launch the update from applications/utilities
2. wait for the updater to find the dongle (which it never does)
3. quit the updater.

I've tried the 4-step update process, to no avail.

Am I doing something wrong?
Will I be able to use the dongle and thus the Plantronics 590A headset?

The D-Link supports A2DP, however it does not work because the Apple Mac OS X has no A2DP support. This is a software thing. Your new adapter only works with A2DP on Windows.

The Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater targets on an internal Apple Bluetooth module or a D-Link DBT-120 USB adapter. If your Bluetooth USB adapter is not found, I doubt it works. However, even if it would work, you will be limited to choppy mono music because Mac OS X does not support A2DP.

Thank you for your response. I now know that I don't have to keep trying to get it to work. I've paired the headset with the D-Link again, and, of course, it paired with absolutely no problem. Do you know if the people at Apple are planning on doing something about this AADP issue? It would be interesting, if they were.

Restart and hold the comman-option-P-R key to reset the PRAM. It will chime a second time. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on, not visible and not used by anything. Delete all devices in Mac OS X > System Preferences > Bluetooth to make sure this is true.

1. Download the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
2. Install it
3. Launch it from Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Updater
4. Apply it to your adapter (takes very long).
5. Start the Apple Bluetooth Assistant and select Headset. Do not use anything else!
6. Make your headset Bluetooth visible. Look up the manual of your headset how to do that.
7. Now select the headset in System Preferences > Sound.

In most cases step 3 is missed. You have to start the already installed updater yourself (do not ask me why).

before posting i've read all the discussion and searched a lot over the net, so the PRAM reset was performed at least 20 times. I've already deleted in /myname/library/preferences all the apple.bluetooth files, is there something more to do? Tnx and regards

Alex's instructions worked perfectly for my iBook, DBT-120 and Panther 10.3.9. Paired two diffferent BT: motorola and SE models. Tried with skype and excellent. Many thanks.

Now, questions: at my office I have iMac, now running tiger 10.4.X --

Can I take the same DBT-120 to the office, download the same installer version and get it to work on Tiger? Or do I need to download a different installer firmware, and if so, will it screw it up DBT-120 for the iBook running panther back home? (yes, I know obvious solution is to install tiger but not enough RAM and iBook old, thinking of MacPowerBook)

Second question, somewhat off topic: at home it works great with skype. What happens if my mobile phone rings (it's also paired at same time)...can I switch between skype and phone?

There is no need to download or apply anything on another machine. The firmware is on the adapater now.

However, sharing a Bluetooth USB adapter on several Mac is no good idea in v10.3 and v10.4. The pairings are not saved on the adapter (anymore) and you might have to pair your device each first time on the different computer. I recommend to test this. pair the headset on your office Mac. If your home Mac argues the pairing was lost, than you should buy a second DBT-120.

I found that the Compusa SKU.312330 USB Bluetooth adapter with external antenna works with headphones in addition to the DLink. When you run the firmware upgrade on the CompUSA adapter it says that the Firmware is up to date. So it works out of the box.

Now to clarify, both adapters do set up headphones, but as soon as I select the headphones in the Sound Output Preferences I get the "Bluetooth Audio Failed..." message and they don't work. This happens with the CompUSA and the DLink adapter and with both a Jabra BT110 headset and MacAlly BlueWave headphones. I am running OS 10.4.5.
