Motorola HS820 Headset

This may be a really dumb question but I have a Motorola HS820 Headset and cannot get it to work with my new powerbook which has bluetooth built in. I want to use the Headset for iChat and Skype.

Do I need to use a D-Link adapter?

Any help or guidance would be gratefully received.

Using a headset needs several steps. Please make sure to follow them in order.
  1. Download the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
  2. Install it
  3. Launch it from Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Updater
  4. Apply it to your adapter (takes very long).
  5. Start the Apple Bluetooth Assistant and select Headset. Do not use anything else!
  6. Make your headset Bluetooth visible. Look up the manual of your headset how to do that.
  7. Now select the headset in System Preferences > Sound.
In most cases step 3 is missed. You have to start the installed updater yourself (do not ask me why). Step 4 fails if your Bluetooth USB adapter is not supported by Apple and you have to go for a D-Link DBT-120 USB adapter.

Mhm, ask Apple support for clarification. I am not sure how to proceed in such a case and if my assumption is right.

When you select the headset option in the Apple Bluetooth Assistant, are you able to pair with your headset or is a message presented, headsets are not supported by your computer?

Do you have a recent iMac G5 (with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR) or an older one?

I had an old Belkin F8T001, which worked fine with pairing and recognising my Moto RAZR. Have the HS820 headset as well. Knew that the current adapter wouldn't support headsets, bought a new D-Link DBT-120. Ran the firmware updater, worked okay I guess, but now under Sys. Prof. shows firmware as 2.1586, and software as 1.6.0f2. Could sync my phone and use file exchange, but couldn't connect phone to computer, and computer wouldn't recognise phone with setup assistant, which I could do with old Belkin.
Headset option works now, but same problem as others with no detection, and won't even detect my phone now. Should I return D-Link and try again or am I in a jam, simply that HS820 won't work with Mac?

the user manual for my headset that I have makes no mention of how to make it "visible", other than simply opening the boom to turn the device on. I have OS 10.4.2 and just downloaded and installed the bluetooth firmware from Apple. And while I'm able to pairup my HS820 headset with D-Link DBT-120, I see no entries in the Sound system preferences for HS820.

regards,
