Motorola V551 and Bluetooth Setup Assistant

I open System Preferneces and click on Bluetooth and Setup New Device. I get to the screen where you type a number in order to pair the devices and either I get the black screen of death or "gathering additional information about your phone" hangs forever. I am on a G4 800MHz TiPowerbook, 10.4.2 and I am using a USB Ambicom Bluetooth device.

I recommend to go for a D-Link DBT-120 USB adapter anyway follow the standard procedures for Mac OS X miracles:

  1. Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > select your start up volume > First Aid > Repair Permissions
  2. Restart the your Mac with the Mac OS X installation CD or DVD (through holding the key C on the keyboard). There select your preferred language and then not install Mac OS X but go to the File menu and select Disk Utility. There select your normal volume > First Aid > Repair disk. Restart your Mac.
  3. System Preferences > Users and hit the small "+" at the bottom to create a new user. Select Log out from the Apple menu and log in this new user.
If it worked in the new user, the problem is somewhere in a file in your users Library > Preferences folder.

If it worked not, check your Apple Bluetooth Software version is at 1.6 and not 1.5.

I run Cocktail on a regular basis. I did boot from my external drive that has Tech Tool Pro 4 on it and repaired and tested everything.

Oddly the USB Bluetooth device has always worked well in the past. I tried pairing the phone with an older OSX 10.3.9 setup and it worked fine. OSX 10.4.2 seems to be the problem, at least I am leaning that way. The 10.3.9 was running BT 1.5.4 and 10.4.2 is running BT 1.6.

Other than buying another BT adapter what would you recommend? I did setup a new user as you suggested and got the black screen of death again. 😟

Alexander, i see you are very helpful on this topic! i am awaiting delivery of a sony bluetooth headset and i thought i would be proactive and follow your steps - up to the step 4 - prior to the arrival of my headset. i have downloaded the updater, installed it, launched it and then i get a message which i have taken a screen shot of.

I have a current model 15" PB, 10.4.2 I have "turned bluetooth on" and am at a bit of a loss at this point!
here is the link to my screen shot.
