always waiting for spinning lolipop

Every time I work on a word processing document, the simplest changes--spelling, or cutting & pasting even one word--brings up the spinning lollipop (pinwheel?) and the old OS 9 spinner for as much as 15 seconds before the change takes place. This is very distracting when trying to write something! I have tried completely dumping preferences and program and re installing, or getting the update, all to no avail.
I am using Appleworks 6.2.4 on OSX 10.2.8

Thanks for the thanks Lance!

Did the trash refuse to empty because an item was "locked"? If so, the 'old' Mac OS 9 trick of holding down the Option key while emptying the Trash usually works.

Having said that, AppleWorks sometimes hinders deleting 'locked' files even when the Option key is used. If that happens, you have to open up AppleWorks 6 and unlock the hidden files inside the application 'package'.

You can do this by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking the AppleWorks 6 application icon. Doing this will cause a menu to appear. Select the Show Package Contents menu item. This will open a new Finder window displaying the 'inside' of the AppleWorks 6 application. Now you need to check each one of these hidden files and ensure they're not locked (the File > Get Info menu will held identify these files.)

If this wasn't the problem, please reply with more of a description.

Cheers.

Dale, Thanks. yes, you are a wizard !. The failure to empty the waste-basket, (whoops - trash !!) was due to some items being locked. Your detailed instructions regarding this have been duly noted.

Where AW is concerned, I have now completely revolutionised my old G3, new iMAC and G4 Powerbook by following your 'anti-rolling ball' instructions, and feel a whole lot better for it !

Whilst on the subject, I always feel it's good to know 'why' software
misbehaves. For instance in the case of AW rolling ball syndrome, what exactly is the software doing to cause this problem. Are the 'alias recent items' being carefully checked one by one by AW, thus causing the delay in reacting to the last command?. It sometimes helps to know how these things come about - a sort of extention of understanding.

Just downloaded 'Sidekick' and will be giving it a run through once off line.
Thanks so much for your help.
Lance.

You've got it in one. And of course, AppleWorks never deletes them, making this task more time consuming as more documents are created.

Cheers

Please help! I recently acquired the spinning lollipop problem after I tried to open something in "Recent Items". I then discovered this fabulous place (!!) and read Dale's Post # 5.2:
"Also, the reason your AppleWorks document was not saved was because you moved it to the Trash. This is a known bug in AppleWorks. If you open a file in AppleWorks and then rename it in the Finder, or move it to a new location, AppleWorks will not save it."

A few months ago, a friend was showing me a few things and moved all of my AW documents (basically all of my important files) into a renamed folder in my Finder. When I tried to open it recently, I discovered it was an alias and that 'the original could not be found'. Then I found the recent items folder which appears to be full of all of these (lost?) documents. Is there any way at all I can reclaim these items from the recent item folder? or anywhere else? I just wanted to know before I trash the contents of it and dealt with the spinning lollipop issue!
Thanks, A

Welcome to Apple Discussions Alissa

Aliases are merely pointers to the actual files/documents. You can tell if an icon is for an alias if there is a small, curved arrow in the lower left of the icon. Also, if you Get Info (from the File menu) on an alias, it will (in Panther, at least) tell you the Kind is Alias & will tell you where the original is located. If the original can't be found, you will just have the button Select New Original. If you use the keyboard combination Command (Apple or propeller key) + Option + i, the Get Info window will change with each icon you highlight saving you from having to use the File menu or keyboard combo (Command + i) each time.

If the originals cannot be found, I'm afraid the files are lost unless you saved them to another disk like an external hard drive or CD for backup.

I was suffering from the long, long, long lollipop spinning wait when I had LOADS and LOADS of fonts in the OS9 System folder.

Even after I compiled my fonts alphabetically into A-Z font suitcases, reducing them from LOADS and LOADS to just 26 additional suitcases, it was a ridiculously long wait for anything because they were still in the System 9 Fonts folder (no matter how neat and tidy it looks).

So I took my beloved LOADS and LOADS of personal fav fonts out of the OS9 System Fonts folder. I only include the fonts I intend to actually use as needed per document.

I peruse font choices in OSX where those fonts suitcases in the Fonts folder in my Users Library doesn't seem to be create such a slow torture. I use a few different OSX font exploring apps like Baytex FontShow!, ViewFontX, and FontViewer. I'm sure there are others (one of these days I'll search for more) but those were free and work really well for my purposes. I make my font choices then install them into the OS9 System Fonts folder IF necessary and all is just perfectly well. No agonizing wait.

Actually, I don't even need to if I'm just working on the document in Classic mode because the fonts appear in the document just fine from the OSX Users Library Fonts folder. it's only when I need to print (my printer only prints in OS9) or if I'm working on the document in OS9.2 that I have to put them in the OS9 System folder.

Did I make any sense?

I have close to 1,000 fonts in 26 folders ~ A thru Z. Believe me, it was worse than sluggish when they were not even that many in the OS9 System folder. But they seem to affect absolutely nothing in my OSX Users Library folder. When I use AppleWorks in the Classic Mode, every single one of those fonts are accessible and nothing is slow. It's when I would work in OS9 with those font suitcase in the OS9 System Fonts folder that I'd wait for a long time. The only aggrevation is when I'm working in Classic to have to actually decide which fonts to use. I pre-decide because that is one heckova long fonts list to contemplate.

Try deleting all of the stuff in the Recent Items folder (/Users/yourusername/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/Starting Points/Recent Items/) as per the note on the Apple Support site http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300349
The sluggish behaviour seems to come on quite suddenly when a "critical mass" of files in the Recent Items folder is reached. Why Apple hasn't fixed this bug yet is beyond me - it's been around for years. I've gone through this a couple of times, far enough apart so I forget what the solution is in between, so I finally made myself a to-do in my Palm Pilot to remind me to clean out Recent Items every six months.

Close...real close. But when I "Open Disc Utility"...there is no opportunity to "select Repair permissions"...no "First Aid". When I do a search for "Repair"
I find nothing, but when i search "First Aid"....bingo, in a folder labled "Applications (Mac OS 9)" there it is. I hate to even look at OS 9, the memories are just too depressing. should there not be a "First Aid" in OS X?
