Under the Edit menu of several programs (Text Edit, Safari, Mail, perhaps others) there is something called Special Characters. It enables you to insert things like accented letters, degree marks, currency symbols, etc. I can't find it in Apple Works word processing program. Am I missing something, or is it not there? If it isn't there, is there some way I could include it, or something like it? I find it very handy.

Go to System Preferences > International > Input Menu and select Character Palette. Tick the box at the bottom that says Show input menu in menu bar. This will appear in the menu bar near your clock and you can use it to select all the special characters you need.
AppleWorks does not support the majority of the characters in the Character Palette as it is not unicode aware. A better choice to see what characters are available in AppleWorks is to use Keyboard Viewer, also activated through the Input Menu.
Everything happened as you predicted, except the Insert button on the Show Character Palette did not light up, therefore it did not work. Any suggestions?
Peggy: You're right in that Darren's suggestion did not work. Everythng happened as he said it would but the Insert button on the Show Character Palette was not highlighted, so it couldn't work. However, your thought that it would not work because it was in Unicode doesn't seem to hold water since the Show Keyboard Viewer is also in Unicode and works fine. Any suggestions?

Appleworks is an older program which does not understand the UTF-8 encoding required for many Unicode characters and thus can only handle a limited portion of the Unicode total available in the Character Palette.
Roger -- If you could specify what characters you are selecting in the Character Palette for input, someone might be able to tell you how to produce them in Appleworks, if they are available in this program.
Hello
I don't use Keyboard Viewer but always use the Palette, even with AppleWorks.
I just built a favourite page displaying only chars usable in AW.
You may do the same if you download (and install the embedded preferences file) 4palette.zip from Peggy's idisk:

Yvan - Yours is the best suggestion so far. I downloaded Peggy's 4palette.zip and installed it, perhaps incorrectly. I opened the hard drive, then the area that has as its icon the little house and my name (rogersavino), then Library, then Preferences, which is where I put it. It seems to work fine, but when I click Insert nothing happens and the window disappears. Where have I gone wrong? rs
Hello
The preferences file was built under Panther. I am wondering if something changed in its structure with the release of Tiger.
I will build a new file under Tiger.

Oops
Back from TigerLand. Something is really changed. Under Tiger, the Palette's insert feature is no longer available when AppleWorks is at front.
I will ask to Apple guy if it is a deliberate feature of if it is a bug.

To type special characters I have just use the open apple + keys. Ex. apple + e then the letter lets me put an accent mark over a vowel. Open apple + v was a square root sign. With Tiger this is not working. The letter is omitted. The formatting works in Panther but not in Tiger. Any ideas to help a world language teacher?
It must have been a LONG summer. I should have used the option key, not the open apple. Now it is working!! Yeah!
I too am trying to add simple special characters to documents & drawings:
trademark and copyright to no avail. Does this mean I will need to purchase
another software program?

Not at all. The trademark and copyright © symbols are easily accessed through the Keyboard Viewer. I just used it to insert them in this post. Open the International Preference Pane, click on the Input Menu tab & click the box next to Keyboard Viewer. After a restart, this will make this available in your menu bar by clicking the flag icon. KeyCaps, used in OS X 10.2 and earlier including OS 8 & 9, has an entry bar where you can type your selection then copy & paste into your document. Keyboard Viewer places the typing directly into the top, open document. Hold down the Shift (⇧), Option (⌥) or both keys to see & use the available characters.
