Special Characters in Appleworks

Under the Edit menu of several programs (Text Edit, Safari, Mail, perhaps others) there is something called Special Characters. It enables you to insert things like accented letters, degree marks, currency symbols, etc. I can't find it in Apple Works word processing program. Am I missing something, or is it not there? If it isn't there, is there some way I could include it, or something like it? I find it very handy.

Hello

If you want to know which chars are usable in AW6, just create a spreadsheet.
In A1 type =ROW(+31)
in B1 type =CHAR(A1)
select A1..B224 an Fill down.

In the column B you will see the available chars.

To access them easily, you may install the free PickChar.app available thru VersionTracker
http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/

Thank you, Peggy. I found that keying option brings up one set of characters, shift+option another and not all of the fonts offer the same sets of special characters-so there is a need to search the list. Though my document font, Bradley Hand ITC TT, does not have the special characters I needed, I found © and ™ using the option key in Helvetica. In some of the fonts at smaller sizing those are not legible. Wish these instructions were available in the manual or through Help in either Apple Help or AW6 Help. Seems odd they are not - I had spent hours trying to find them. Am very happy to not need to purchase another SW program.
Thank you Yvan for your reference, but Peggy's suggestions are what I needed for text and drawing documents.

I again searched Mac Help and AW6 Help for reference to "special
characters" - if the instructions for my need of inserting © and ™
are in either they are too deeply buried to be found. Mac Help
refers to the use of Keyboard Viewer in the context of requiring
a foreign language translation - the keyboards of all languages that
are installed with the system. It does give instruction for spreadsheet
special accents/characters. AW6 Help has no information on "Keyboard
Viewer". A query brings up the standard keyboard issues.
Thanks to you, Peggy, I am not - at least at this time - going to be
forced to buy Adobe.

Hello

You will not find the characters access described in the help.
This is why I offered two tips.
The spreadsheet allow you to see quickly which chars are usable in a font: just apply it to column B.

The PickChar app give the ability to insert easily special chars without knowing the exact key press required. It allow you to select the display font.

From my point of view, it is more efficient than Keyboard Viewer but I'm perhaps biased because under Mac OS 9 I was using a similar tool entitled PopChar (and I wrote such a tool for the Apple IIgs when I was young).

This may have been removed from the help files due to Tiger's support of UNICODE (not shared with AppleWorks, unfortunately).

In most 'standard' (pre-unicode) Mac fonts, ™ is at option-2, © at option-G.

You'll also find ® at option-R.

Keyboard Viewer is a System feature, rather than an AppleWorks feature. It's launched using the International pane in System preferences, then put in action through the Keyboard menu (which will appear as a flag near the right end of the menu bar).

Barry

Hi Barry

My response was about the exact way to access the ™ character.

In the french mac help, there is always this chapter which is "generic":

I assumes that there is an english version of it in the english help.

Doing a search in Mac Help for "characters" I found several topics. Any of the help topics are also available as Knowledge Base articles. For starters there are these that are specific to Tiger, but there are the same or similar one for other versions of the Mac OS. A search in the main Support tab for the title of the Help topic will get you several.
] Adding accent marks to characters
] Typing special characters and symbols. This one deals with using Character Palette & not all characters are available to AppleWorks.
