Home movies freezing and pausing

Up until a month ago, our Apple TV worked well. Before the invention of apple TV's, we collected quite an extensive DVD collection, and decided to purchase the ATV, convert our home movies to apple TV compatible movie files, and store them in the apple TV movie library for easy and convenient access. We also have all of our home movies stored there too, and watch them regularly. This worked a dream, up until a month ago...

Now, any home movie, or movie that we copied and stored ourselves pauses, skips and freezes throughout the movie. Movies we downloaded from iTunes work flawlessly. All of our software is up to date. We have reset the apple TV, turned off the TV, reset iTunes, but now don't know what to do.
Help!!! If we can't fix this, the AppleTV is useless to us!

Hi. Sorry to hear about your problem. Our family also loves watching home movies on it. We easily have over 60 or 70 hours.

1. Are your home movies on a different hard drive than the downloaded movies? If so, you may have a drive going bad. Do these videos skip in iTunes as well or no? If this is the case, back up your movies and get a new hard drive.

2. If you sync the home movies to your Apple TV, do you still have the problem? If not, maybe it is a network issue. Try disconnecting your ATV from the network then reconnecting to it.

Our apple TV is linked to my computer, and all movies are stored on this computer.
I have tried resetting the connection, but the problem persists....
Very frustrating! They used to work great.

It sounds like you are streaming then. They syncing one instead so that it is local to the Apple TV and let us know what happens.

No problem. Streaming is when you have your media on your Mac and its playing over your network onto the Apple TV. Syncing copies the media to your Apply TV's hard drive so that the media plays directly from the Apple TV and not over your network.
In iTunes if click on your Apple TV, go to Movies and click the check box for one of your home movies, then push Sync, that movie will be copied to your Apple TV. Once the copying is complete, go to your Apple TV and try playing that movie. Does it still have a problem?

Oh, gotcha. All of my movies are synced over the Apple TV. When the movies self-pause, the timeline bar appears at the bottom, and it looks as though it is loading the rest of the movie so that it can play. Eeach time it pauses it looks as though the movie is fully loaded, but it does this every few minutes.

I've tried everything I can think of.

Try pulling all the cables for 30 seconds. What sort of connection do you have between the tv and the tv.

Okay, perhaps those movies ON the Apple TV got corrupt? I would try NOT syncing them(unchecking them) IF they play fine on your Mac. Once they are not on your Apple TV, try playing them again, being they would now be streaming from your Mac. Any difference?

We have a Time Capsule that we use as our wireless router, and both the apple TV and the iMac are connected through that to the network. I didn't do anything special with the configurations or anything, I think it's just a standard connection.

It's strange that the iTunes purchased movies are working just fine, and it's just the home movies and ones we copied that are no longer working (after working fine for almost 2 years)....
