Saving playback speed?

Hi, I'm using Quicktime Pro and i noticed that you can change the playback speed in the A/V controls, however I can't seem to find a way to save it like this? I have a video I want to speed up and save that way. I first did this in iMovie HD, but when I saved it, the quality was noticeably worse than the original, so I was hoping maybe there is a way to do this in Quicktime.

I've found a way! Lucky for us it was by accident. It is in the manual in first 3 points on page 33, all be it somewhat vague. Here goes:

Movie A = 1440 x 900 normal speed.

Movie B = 640 x 480 fast rendered in iMovie using Movie A.

1. Open Movie A
2. Select Window -> Show Movie Properties.
3. In Movie A Properties Window you will see tracks. Select and "Enable" - check mark the "Video Track".
4. Just above to the left there are two boxes "Extract" and "Delete". Click on "Extract". A copy of Movie A is produced. (Don't delete it yet!)
5. Select Edit > Copy of Extracted Movie.
6. Click on Movie B.
7. Select Window > "Show Movie Properties" (A new but different Properties Window.)
8. Drag the "In" marker to the beginning and "Out" marker to the end. (Found on the same line, but just below the "Playhead" arrow.) If not there view Preferences.
9. Select Edit > “Add to Selection and Scale”.
10. Take a look at the "Properties Window" of Movie B.
11. You will see "Video Track 1" Duration (a small value eg. 1:58:01)
12. You will see "Video Track 2" Duration (exact same small value eg. 1:58:01)
13. Select "Video Track 1" and "Delete" on top left next to "Extract" button.
14. Select Movie B and "Save" Now play the video. It will be as fast but larger and clearer than the old one created in iMovie.

Hope it works for ya.

Choose "Select All" first then "Copy" before you Edit > “Add to Selection and Scale”.

Also YouTube might not accept the video if you just use "Save As" then Select "Save as self-contained movie"

I had to re-open the final file and use "Export" "Movie to Quicktime Movie" from drop-down menu.

Options: Compression H.264

Quality: High

Key frame rate: 24

Encoding mode: multi-pass

Dimensions: 720 x 450 (Current) my size choice.

Here's what it looks like:

Basically there are two strategies here -- 1) rescaling the player duration in QT Pro or 2) re-scaling the time reference in an application like the JES Deinterlacer (free).

1) In the first method, simply create a new QT player having content whose duration is a fraction (less than 1X length for fast motion) or a multiple (greater than 1X the length for slow motion), copy/paste the original content to the new player using the "scale" option, delete the track used to reset scaling, and save the modified file.

2) In the second, you simply rescale the timing reference scale for the movie playback and re-save the file under a new name.

Since no re-compression of the video track is performed, the original video quality is not changed as such.
