My fans dont ramp up!

I was performing a test to see when my fan would ramp up in my new MacBook Pro. I fired up Safari and opened up as many youtube videos until the processor was clearly struggling to keep them all running. Maybe 10 tabs. Then in iStat, I watched the CPU temp and fan speed. My fans ALWAYs lug around at 2000 RPMs give or take a bit. The CPU climbed up until 90 degrees C and the fans were still unchanged. Is this normal? I stopped the test at 90 C fearing damage or a crash.

What is going on here?

Macbook Pro, 2.53 ghz, 15" antiglare screen, Mac OS X (10.6.1), 4 gigs RAM

IMHO it is not a good idea to use alternative fan control processes like SMCfancontrol and FanControl unless you are sure that the normal system is working properly, especially with a computer that is still under warranty.

Doing so can "mask" underlying problems that really need fixing first.

Sure , if you have an older computer with a less than optimal cooling system, or a normally operating computer that you just want to run a bit cooler than it would otherwise, give the 3rd party fan control software a go, but under normal circumstances , with a properly function MBP , fans should be speeding up long before the temperatures mentioned by some in this thread are reached. Simply adding a 3rd party software hack to deal with the matter isn't the way to go in such situations.

well I agree that 3rd party software never quite lives up to 1st party in quality and reliability... but due to the fact that my first party fans weren't spinning I thought perhaps some other software could "make" it work... but they aren't spinning at all before the fan control or after which leads me to believe that its a hardware issue anyway so i'm going to take it into the apple store... the fans don't work when booted in windows mode either in case anyone was wondering... and the audio is terrible too but that's a whole different issue altogether.. thanks everyone...

hey rod, thanks for the link to the smc reset... I've tried it a couple times pushing the left shift control option and power buttons once... waied 5 seconds and powered on... all after a proper shut down from the apple menu...but how can I tell if it did anything? ... also i suspected the death of my fans before I installed the fan control... and only did so to confirm my suspicion... It is most likely hardware failure... I'm also wondering if it's actually the GPU that gets so hot and not so much the CPU... because as you stated the system would shut down before it reached heat levels that high...

Mattixface, what you say here is a perfect example of why , when you run into problems like the ones you mention, and are within the warranty period of your computer, you should simply take your computer to a reputable dealer / Authorised Apple repairer and let them sort it out.

If I ever ran into ANY of the more serious temperature issues mentioned in this thread with a computer under warranty then I'd be there like a shot.

The message is pretty simple, isn't it? If your fans don't work for one reason or another take your MBP back to Apple and get them to sort it out! It is a rare occurrence, but every now and then it happens. In my experience (though I've had less than a handful of real hardware problems since I bought my first Mac in 1986) Apple have actually been more than happy to come to the party in resolving the matter. It is one of the primary reasons why I keep on buying Macs! They have always been very good with such things.

Your own problem is a classic case of a hardware problem. If the fans aren't running at all, as you say, then you very obviously have a serious warranty issue. I've never known Apple to do anything other than come to the party in such situations in more than twenty years of use!

Ratty Mouse,

None of the posts that mention fans not kicking in until near 100ÂşC here are "normal".

You need to remember that most people posting on boards like this one are here because they have a problem. If you head to the cardiac ward of your local hospital you don't find the beds full of people whose hearts are healthy! You can get a very skewed view of what is "normal" in such situations.

If your fans are not ramping up until such temperatures are reached you should take your computer to your Apple dealer and get it checked out.

Cheers

Just an update for all those with similar heat problems... I took it into an apple store and they looked at it for about 5 minutes... and told me the left fan had shut off... and they reset the fan and now both fans work perfectly... and it runs MUCH MUCH cooler... I cant give any temperatures as I haven't re installed any fan software... Just the fact that I can touch my Macbook without burning my hand is proof enough that it's running cooly! ... It was a very simple fix... I wouldn't hesitate to take it into the store if you are near one...
