Using Airport express abroad

I am currently in England for a few months and am staying with a family who has a broadband internet connection. I have my ibook with me and want to buy an airport express base station to get online in their house. Although they said they don't think their server supports apple products. Is that even possible? Is there a chance that my wireless will not work in the UK with airport express? Thanks so much for the help!

Your iBook will work fine in the UK with a UK-purchased Airport Express - though if your permanent home is in N. America I suggest you order an Airport Express from the US and just use it with a power plug adapter for the duration of your stay in the UK.

One thing to keep in mind - the Airport Express connects to the internet via an ethernet interface. If your host family has an internet router, you can cable the Express directly to it. Most people in the UK with only a single computer make use of what their DSL provider gives them - which is a USB-interface DSL modem. USB-interface DSL modems cannot be connected to an Airport Express.

Thanks for the response. One more question if you don't mind...what is my option if they don't have an internet router? And more importantly how much more is it going to cost me? I'm assuming that they are just using what given by their provider which is a USB modem. Are there any other options besides buying a airport express as well as a router? I'm not too certain how everything works...somewhat computer illiterate. Thanks so much for your time.

If they don't have an ethernet-interface DSL modem, the options are:

- replace the USB-interface DSL modem with an ethernet inteface model, and cable it to the Airport Express
- replace the USB-interface DSL modem with a "wireless gateway". In that case, no Airport Express required.
- forget about the idea. Just plug the USB-inteface modem into your iBook for those times you need to access the internet (and install the required drivers for the device)
