10.6.2. Voloume & Time Icons Missing

Hi Everybody,

I just upgraded to 10.6.2, rebooted and recognized the missing volume and time icon in the menu bar at the top. Yet, no success in getting them back, latest thing I tried was repairing disk permissions on the whole disk, but no success either.

Do you have an suggestion how to fix this issue?

EDIT: Having a look into the Sound-Panel in the Systemprefs, I can see the checkbox is un ticked (Show Volume Icon in Menu Bar...). But when trying to check it, nothing happens - the box stays unchecked (like read only)... Same goes for the time icon checkbox in the Time&Clock Prefpane...

I have the same problem on my mac pro since I installing 10.6.2 . I have no icons in my menu bar??
Tried various recommendations to delete plists and such but to no avail. Deleted iStat and even opened terminal and typed "killall SystemUIServer"
I don't get it?

I have this problem, too. All Apple system icons disappeared, but icons from Growl still show up. MenuMeters cannot load, either (I uninstalled it anyway).

I saw someone say that they had this happen because they disabled Spotlight by modifying /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle. I had Spotlight disabled via TinkerToolSystem, and even when I re-enabled it, the icons are still gone. I also replaced Search.bundle with a virgin one from a friend's install to rule out it being modified somehow, but it didn't help.

No idea what to do at this point. Any ideas, Apple?

sudo mv /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bak
killall SystemUIServer

It's too bad Apple won't let us just disable spotlight if we don't want to waste ram and cpu cycles on useless crap. If you don't know where your own files are then I suggest selling your computer and buying a notebook.

Re-disabling Spotlight (i.e. sudo mv Search.bundle ...) brought back the menu bar icons for me...

I'm glad to hear it! I should clarify in my angst-ridden comment that I meant a "notebook" as in a "paper notebook." Not a "notebook computer." Silly me. -_-

Yeah, fixed that problem! Many many thanks!!!!

BTW: i managed to get rid of the shortcut and icon in the menu bar and disabled the automated indexing. Result: minimum performance usage of spotlight. Works good for me.

matzebrock, I have no performance hit by spotlight because the processes never run. If you do sudo mdutil -avs it should say "Spotlight server is disabled." If not, keep digging. :P
