I have tried plugging and unplugging it. I get a flash of a light right when I plug it in, but then it goes dead - no light at all. I have tried both a hard reset and factory settings reset, to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions?
THanks,
liz
Add another Airport Express Base Station to the graveyard. 2 months after the warranty period.
I heard a soft "pop" noise, then my Airport signal gone. I can smell the burnt smell at the USB connector. I connected my HP Laserjet 1300 to Airport Express all the time.
Just a quick message to add my airport express base to the long list of dead ones... It was just 16 months. Will Apple agree there is a problem with this product?
Just had a look in the forum to see if there are any other users that have experienced this problem. Surprise, surprise, mine's not an isolated case. It's 14 months old. I suppose because they are fruit ( apple ), they have a use by date. It just seems that this expiry date is 1 or 2 months out of warranty. In any case, as this appears to be a design or manufacture problem, I am going to appeal to apple to have mine repaired or replaced at apples cost, even though it is outside their warranty period.
Will let you know how I go.
Airport Express Base Station. Mac OS X (10.3.9) Purchased December 2004
One thing that might help some people. AppleCare for a Mac also covers Airport Express Base Station. As Apple says:
Comprehensive coverage
The AppleCare Protection Plan covers your Mac, as well as an AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, and Apple RAM used with your Mac. Mac mini, Power Mac, MacBook Pro, and PowerBook customers may also enroll one Apple display for coverage, provided that the Mac and the display are purchased together.
Mine also dead. Bought six months ago. Smells funny, as something burned inside. By the number of similar postings looks like this product is not up to standards.
Another one (mine) has died 13 months after I bought it at Arlington's (VA) Apple store (in november 2004).
According to many posts seen on French Macusers website (www.macbidouille.com), it should be a default with the power supply that only concerns Airport Express. As you cannot open it easy without breaking the cover, it won't be repaired. Let's expect some warranty extand from Apple ?
My Airport Express died as well, just 1 month out of warranty. Fortunately I bought it with an American Express card. They double the warranty on items purchased with the card. So I got my full money back, no hassle, no problem, just took a week 🙂 . If you used an Amex, look into it.
I've been in contact with Apple Australia customer relations, a few times, and they refuse to cover anything as my ax is out of warranty ( by less than 2 months). They seem to be getting biligerent with me. It's like they think I'm trying to take advantage of them, when in fact all I want is some fairness. I referred them to this thread and they replied they don't place any weight on discussions. I'm not giving up yet though. Next step is sending a letter to The Manager of customer relations stating my concerns and if I cannot get a satisfactory resolution, then I will be lodging a complaint with our Office of Fair Trading ( a Govt. Dept concerned with consumer protection.)
Regardless of Apples warranty ( 12mths), legally ( in Australia at least), there is an implied Statutory Warranty which insists that goods must be fit for purpose. I'm claiming a $200AUD Airport Express that fails after 13 1/2 months is not fit for purpose.
To help me get some statistics, could anyone who reads this discussion and has experienced this problem, leave a reply to the discussion stating this. I'm thinking there are a lot more cases of this happening then what Apple would have us believe.
