Dead Airport Express - no light at all

I have tried plugging and unplugging it. I get a flash of a light right when I plug it in, but then it goes dead - no light at all. I have tried both a hard reset and factory settings reset, to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions?
THanks,
liz

My first airport is dead also, worrying thing is I have 3 more!
I was going to replace this one (purchased in March 2005 in the States), but reading this forum doesn't make me confident!
Apple Cami Store in Brussels suggested I speak to Apple Customer support:
Customer support in Ireland were very pleasant but said that it was forbidden for them to replace outside of the 12 Month warranty!
They are aware of this forum but do not officially recognised any problem with Airport Express.
Clearly I'm not satisfied!
have posted details on

I wander how long the remaining AX will live for?
Serial Number Failed is: HS5024CFQV0 A1084 Dead
Still Working purchased at the same time: HS4501AEQV0 A1084 Alive (warm not hot)!
Still Working purchased in Europe : 6F5290X8T0C A1088 Alive (warm not hot)

Another dead AP Express. Gutted, my 21st present gone after 17 months. S/N HS4410...
Added myself to the macbouduille list and replied to that Aussi story. I'm in NZ but support goes through Australia. Managed to sweet talking them into giving me a new iPod Shuffle out of warranty - I had four die in a row. I wonder if I can do it with the AP Express...
Ciao

If you are in the UK:
1) Your complaint is with the seller, not the manufacturer (unless you bought from the Apple Store.)
2) It is irrelevant if the item is outside of its guarantee (a guarantee is an extension to your existing rights.) Your complaint is under the 6 year period (5 years in Scotland) of statutory rights afforded by the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended.) This states that items must be of satisfactory quality and durability.

3) You must write, registered delivery, to the seller and state the above and claim that the item was not of satisfactory quality and, by the very fact that it stopped working after xx months, not durable. You must claim that a reasonable person would expect an electrical item, which cost £xx, to last longer than xx months.

4) You can mention this discussion board, hardmac.com etc. to show that this is not a "one off."

5) You must ask the seller to provide you with a refund, a replacement or a repair. Because you have had some use of the item, the seller may make a reduction from the original price when refunding the money.

6) Give them 14 days to reply.

7) Get in touch with consumer direct: 08454 04 05 06, who are very helpful and can refer a seller on to trading standards.

8) The seller may tell you that after 6 months it is up to you to prove that the product was faulty, this is true. BUT do not get somebody to examine the item. Tell the seller that you will take him to the Small Claims Court, where the court will appoint a computer engineer who is agreeable to both parties.
You may end up in Small Claims Court, but you should win your money or part of it back, as long as you have been seen to have tried to reach an agreement beforehand.

(My AEX died a month ago (after 18 months) and have gone through the above (except the Small Claims Court) with the seller, who has now agreed a 50% refund.)

Keep fighting, don't take no for an answer and stay calm!!

To update on my report to this thread last week, unfortunately I wasn't able to claim through AMEX (wrong card). Rang Apple customer relations, have been over the last week shifted up the line of command. I am currently trying to claim the replacement Airport Express under my AppleCare Protection Plan cover on my Powerbook. As has been experienced in this thread both in Australia and elsewhere Apple customer relations have had various interpretations of the sentence. ..."An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, and Apple RAM modules are also covered under APP if owned by you and used with the Covered Equipment."... They seem to conveniently want to add 'must be purchase with' which relates to other Apple products ie. display etc. I have sent a letter to Apple as they wouldn't put in writing what they stated on the phone.

Aside from the units obviously being defective and the consumer issues associated, this problem has also highlighted that the APP seems to misrepresent the cover afforded to the Apple products stated such as the Aiport Express. Very disappointing response so far although the Apple staff have been pleasant and professional. I will be forwarding these concerns to Sydney Morning Herald.

My Airport Express just died too.
I think it is at about 18 months of use too - although there were a number of months when I did not use it and, frankly, it got very little use first on the stereo, then a USB printer. then nothing. It was only recently when I hooked it up to a new USB printer. Some months later it started to need a reset every few weeks. This last failure (blinking amber) can not be fixed - I tried all the resets I could think of, etc.
Clearly this product is defective. I am contacting the Consumer Product Safety Commission here in the U.S. to request a recall.

Ok, I've read almost all of the posts in this thread and it does not bode well for my AX that I recently purchased and is only sending the left channel of my iTunes library (I,ve checked and re-checked all components with other cables, media, etc.) I've posted in another thread for assistance but haven't had any as of yet. I don't want to go through the agony that I find in this thread so I would like to find another brand to try. Is there a competitive router that will wirelessly play my iTunes on my stereo remotely? I would appreciate specifics if you will. Thanks

My out of warranty Airport Express was dead out of the blue about a week ago.
I called Apple support at 800-275-2273 (don't press buttons - wait for human to come on)
The tech was great. He had me do a "factory reset" which seems to be different from a normal reset, hard reset, or factory settings reset. He was level 2. The first tech sent me right up to him when I told him I tried all the other tricks in and not in the book.
Here is what he had me do:
Hold the reset in with a paper clip while the unit is unplugged. Continue to hold reset while plugging unit into the power outlet in the wall. Wait for green light to flash 4 times (takes a few seconds). Then release reset button.
This sends an electrical charge through the flash memory erasing it. He warned not to do this often or repeatedly as it is rough on the circuits.
I then used AirPort Setup Assistant to set it up. Works great now!
So maybe you unit is not dead or defective but just needs this hard reset?
Above advice, phone number is applicable only to U.S. units. I am sure same will work for Europe and Asia but I would call the Apple tech line for your country before I would do ANYTHING to be sure. Don't blame me if you don't check.

Hello

What do you mean by "dead" in your report? was there any light emitted from the APX LED? (orange, green or red)?
if yes, then your APX was not dead, at least physically.

here in this topic we are talking about defective APX that died, usually following a burst-like noise with some optional smells.

I am glad that you could reset your APX.

I joined the club recently, my Airport Express working perfectly for about 20 months, then it just died. Thanks to an earlier thread, I used the Applecare cover on my Powerbook and Apple have agreed to replace the Express with no question. I did not buy the Express at the same time as the Powerbook.
