slow touchpad tap-to-click when tap-to-drag is enabled

I enabled the tap-to-click and tap-to-drag options on my macbook pro and I noticed that the tap-to-click has a very slow reaction. After I tap, it takes a significant time to actually click. (the same problem occurs also on other macbooks)

The strange thing is that, if I disable the tap-to-drag option, then the tap-to-click became quick as it is supposed to be.

Is there any hidden setting to solve the problem?
I would be happy if it behaved like a normal touchpad on a pc.

Many thanks for your help,

Fausto

I have looked long and hard for a solution to that problem but have found none. I find it very frustrating.

Older Macs powered with the PPC chip could use an app called "SideTrack". It allowed for scrolling the trackpad in a way the Mac did not otherwise allow. But, that is not the feature I used it for. What I liked was the fact that it got rid of the delay that you refer to. It had an instant response when you tapped the trackpad. I wrote to the author commenting on that fact but the author wrote back saying that what I was talking about did not exist. So, I think that some people don't even notice the delay that frustrates you and me and that is why it gets little or no attention.

Fausto,
I see that you are using 10.6.2. I find with 10.6.x the trackpad is not near as responsive. Often it will not respond to a single tap or even 2 taps to do something that should only take on tap. This is not always bout occasionally. When I go back to using 10.5.8 the problem goes away. I wonder if you experience this with 10.6.x?

This is an issue that a number of people have commented on. I just wonder how universal it is.
Thanks.

This delay was driving me nuts until I figured out to turn off the double-tap-to-drag option. It's just really poor UI design to allow a delay like that on every tap. There's no need for it to wait for the second tap -- just engage dragging if a second tap arrives in time on a draggable area. If the tap area cause any action due to a single tap (e.g. a button), then that isn't a draggable area without clicking the trackpad button. This is simple stuff, and a bad oversight by their interface design folks.

Also, the trackpad needs a slider setting for tap sensitivity. It is starting to give me user-rage that half my taps aren't being recognized, although at least with the dragging setting turned off I don't have to wait to find out which were recognized and which weren't.

Third, I agree with the person who said the tactile response of the integrated trackpad button isn't very nice. I am surprised Apple chose a button solution with such poor user feel.

I bought this mac (my first) for the trackpad and multi-touch and gestures more than any other feature, and these issues are really disappointing. Lest it sound like I'm just here to bash Apple, I like the computer otherwise. These happen to be the few issues that are really frustrating me, and which are surprising given Apple's emphasis and outstanding record with this sort of user design.
