Linksys Site for Dummies

Anyone know of a site that CLEARLY and SLOWLY explains how I can lock down and secure my wireless internet connection?

Linksys wants me to pay them $40 for the privilege of getting this set up. Nice.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

The simplest things to do. First I would password protect access to the router's admin area. The next thing to do is create security for your wireless access. I trust you have a manual. If not they are online at the Linksys web site. In any browser type in the router's address. For Linksys this is usually 192.168.1.1 then hit return. You are presented with a box where you need to put in a user name and password. Just type in 'admin' in the password box without the quotes. I believe that's the default password until you create your own. Then you should be in the routers admin area. At a main heading called Administration>Management you have the opportunity to change the default password to what you want. Save the settings. Don't forget the password or you'll need to reset the router. Then main heading Wireless>Wireless Security you can now set up a security mode so no one can use your router to access the internet. That's just basic stuff. Read the manual.

The most important thing is knowing that a router has two passwords: Admin and wireless network.

The admin password is what lets a person gain control of the router and change its settings. This can be accessed over wireless or wired ports. You do want to change the admin password.

The wireless network password is what you set when you enable wireless security. You should be using WPA, not the weak WEP, and the password must not be one that can be found in a dictionary. This password prevents people from joining the wireless network.

I won't go into more detail because there are many articles about this on the Web. I only wanted to point on the distinction between the router admin password and the wireless network password because many seem confused by it.
