My head's going to explode @ max. ram

Hi all,
I'm trying to find out some update info on my mid 07 MBP 2.4 (MA896LL) OR A1226. I went to iFixit to learn about installing ram myself. Speaking to them, they suggested putting a 4GB module in and leaving one GB module in or even replacing on GB module for a new 2GB thus having 6 GB of ram. They sell their own parts.
Now I thought that was a little strange, so here I am to find out definitively, how much ram can I install and will be recognized etc.

This appears to be one of the models where you can put more RAM in it than Apple says. Apple says 4GB but MacTracker and others say 6GB. This often happens when bigger modules come out after Apple completes testing and ships, although it is always limited by the motherboard itself, which is why you can't go all the way to 8GB.

There seems to be nothing wrong with what you were told. To get to 6GB you must have a 4GB module in one slot and a 2GB module in the other.

Over the years RAM upgrades have been released that increased a computer's capacity beyond Apple's specs. If the computer is no longer in production Apple doesn't go back and certify the computer with the larger capacity upgrades but that doesn't mean they aren't usable/safe.
