iPhone Deleted All My Music

I was crossing the border into Canada yesterday morning on a brief trip to obtain Tim Horton's Donuts while listening to a RadioLab podcast, I pushed the Artist button in the lower left and the "Updating Library Could Take a Few Minutes" message appeared, in about a minute my library popped up and says "NO MUSIC you can download music from iTunes" all my playlists are gone and so are all of my podcasts except all the RadioLab episodes.

My iPhone was just updated a week ago and has never done this before. In the About tab it says I have 0 songs and 15 podcasts but it also says I only have 2.4GB of my 14.6GB is available.

I plan to sync my iPhone to hopefully fix this issue, however it was very frustrating to lose all my music right when I wanted to listen to it. If I had been on a vacation or something it could have been disastrous!

It happened again. I was downloading a few episodes of a podcast and I think one was still downloading when I tried to play a new one I just downloaded and dropped back to the main screen and when I went back in it said "updating music" and all my music was gone but not my podcasts. Not cool!!!

Happened to me for the first time, I downloaded podcasts many times, but happened now. Downloaded two episodes of CNET's BOL and voila all songs are gone. This is frustrating, as I am away from home and I do not have any my computer with me. This need to be fixed. I now just have 0 songs and 0 videos.

Also the About says I have just 2.1GB available, in my 16GB phone, I do not have 14GB of apps or photos so all the data is there , any way to restore it with out re-syncing from my computer.

There's no way to restore with your backup without iTunes.

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

Try purchasing a single song from your iPhone.

I don't understand what the crap is going on. Only a few of my playlists are showing up on my iPhone and those that are aren't displaying any music, even though I can confirm that the music is there. I've tried reformatting my iPhone, and redoing my smart playlists, but to no avail. It must be an issue with the latest software or something. Any word on a fix?

danalt7's fix worked for me as well:

HERE IS THE WORKAROUND: connect your iPhone to a computer you don't normally sync with. You can probably see your music in light gray. While connected, try running the iPod application a couple of times.

BUT note that you must have iTunes installed on the computer!

I downloaded some podcasts and my phone got in this bad state. Now I've plugged this phone into my work computer many times, but that never fixed this problem. After reading this thread, I installed iTunes at work, looked at the "Music" view on my iPhone (I had to do this in the left pane of iTunes - drop down the "My iPhone" tree and select the Music item). I saw all my music there. I then unlocked my iPhone and went to the iPod; it spent about a minute rebuilding my library, and then all my music was accessible.
