iDVD stuck at multiplexing and Burn ("about one minute left" for hours)

Hello,

Well my problem is pretty simple, I am trying to create a simple DVD in iDVD with a *.mov file and a *.m4v file.
Everything goes well and pretty quick untill the last step (multiplexing and burning). One one line of the sceen it says "done" one line below that it says "about one minute left" and it stays there, the burn never finishes.

It counts down very good for the last 5 minutes left, and than it stops at "about one minute left".

Does anyone have an idea what can solve this ?

Thnx.

MBP 15" late 2007, Mac OS X (10.6.2), iDVD version 7.0.4 (latest according to software update)

I've had this problem before and after long hours of trying to solve this problem, I found one that works for me.

Clean the DVD burner lens! It is different from the reader lens and it gets dirty very often. I bought a lens cleaner from Office Depot called the "Laser Lens Cleaner" and it worked wonders. I was up and burning in a few minutes.

I'd go with Verbatim Dvd-R also. It's highly recommended on this forum. If that fails, then I'd also try a shot of compressed air at a safe distance (6-8") from the dvd lens itself. You also have some very good advice here regarding the use of a Dvd Lens cleaner kit. I recommend using a high quality kit from Maxell or 3M. Nearly all these kits are made in China these days. But be aware. A quality kit will cost you about $12 / more. If you try and get by with a less expensive kit, then you run the risk of doing more damage than good to super drive in your mac. Bottom line is that you get what you pay for.

Have no answer. Same happens to me. Wanted to sympathize. I transfer VCR tape via Elgato video capture to iMovie and work on with no problem. Then transfer to iDVD and work on with no problem. iDVD processes until the last minute or so--then stops just like yours. Does same with Verbatim or Maxell either -R or +R. Will respond again if I ever solve the problem.

If you're making your movies in Final Cut Pro (or Express), and you're adding chapter markers there, then try the following:

1. Make sure your chapter markers are more than one second into your sequence and more than one second before the end.
2. Don't add markers over audio or video transitions (usually a second or two before or after)
3. Don't add more than 36 markers, and make sure that they all are marked as "chapter" markers

After that, export to qt with markers and audio. Create a new iDVD project. Drag the movie file into your iDVD project. You can figure it out from there. Also, try a different theme - there are a couple (some of the older ones) that seem to have bugs.

Good luck.

Hi Roger,

Do you happen to use Toast also with the Elagto device? If so, do you run into the same scenario there? Might help us narrow down this issue.

I've been a happy Mac Newbie Fanboy for about a year, (MBPro 13 & Imac 27) This is my first time trying to burn a DVD on either one of my macs. Boy am I disappointed with this issue. I've killed the better part of my day trying to make this work, trying some of the things here. I finally went down the hall to the old PC that I passed down to my co-worker and burned it off in 5 minutes using Nero Express.

So I too had this same issue, stuck on multiplexing. Here is my work around:

1. When you go to press the burn button in iDVD, hold down the option key. This lets you create a disc image of the movie.

2. Once the disc image is created, open it in Toast (sorry if you do not have Toast). Then burn the DVD there. Works like a charm for me.

Good luck!

1. When you go to press the burn button in iDVD, hold down the option key. This lets you create a disc image of the movie.

You can also select creating a disk image file using the option under FILE in the iDVD menu bar.

2. Once the disc image is created, open it in Toast (sorry if you do not have Toast). Then burn the DVD there. Works like a charm for me.

You don't need Toast to burn a disk image file to writable media; you can also use the Apple Disk Utility application that comes with your Mac.

BTW, there can be MANY causes of iDVD stuck at multiplexing and Burn errors and creating a disk image file won't solve all of them (although it is a useful troubleshooting step when such problems occur).

I also am having this problem and followed the instructions to save to disk image and then burn from disk utility. It did not work. The disk remained blank though it seemed to go through all the steps.

I am using Sony DVD-R on my imac 27 with Snow Leopard with '11 package for imovie.

I was able to burn photos on CD-R to rule out defective burner. I will try to clean lens and try Verbatim DVD-R.

I last burned a project slide show in June and had no issues through iDVD so don't know what happened. I have 400GB of free memory.

Any advice would be helpful. I'm not wise with computers at all, maybe need to be a better housekeeper with junk in it, but just expect it to work like it always has.

I too had this problem with dvd being stuck in multiplexing for 1 minute or less for several minutes. I cancelled and ejected disk. I had an "&" in my title and somebody said maybe that would be why so I deleted it and I am now copying onto dvd and actually see my movie being processed. It didn't do this last time. Also I had entered a photo to be used when dvd was inserted into player...I also deleted that photo. I am using DVD+R 120 min 4.7 GB and my movie is aproximately 1 hour. 231.3 MB.

So not sure if it was the & or the photo I placed in the beginning slot. It have been using the computer while it is processing so maybe has to do with energy saver, screen saver etc., not sure.

I am still waiting - 9 minutes to go...will post here if this works.

I just copied photos on 2 cds so don't think my lense needs cleaning.

It's making noise and didn't do this last time - like it might work - hope so!

I have 8.0.6 iMovie which I imported into iDVD.

Version of iDVD is 7.1.2

Running Lion OSX 10.8.5. Haven't upgraded to Maverick until I finish up somethings!

ok stopped making noise and said one minute.....DONE!! bam out came a disk!! Now will insert into computer player and see if we have a movie!!

Yes a movie!! it works. I haven't tried in DVD yet as we just moved somethings around in our home but should work! if not will post here again.

So not sure what was hanging it up - the photo in the beginning or the & in the title. But hope this helps:)

As a general practice follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

I've had this same problem. Disc would eject with one minute left to burn. The DVD would play ok for about 3-5 minutes then just freeze. I tried all the reboots and getting better DVD-R, etc. All to no avail.

The final and easiest solution was the mp4 I was trying to burn to disc had periods and & symbols and spaces, i.e. My Great Trip & homecoming.2014.mp4 I removed all of the weird punctuation so it was MyGreatTripAndHomecoming2014.mp4 and it burned with no issues what so ever.

I recommend removing all spaces and punctuation and only using numbers/letters FIRST. Then jump through all the other hoops if that does not work. But I bet it does...
