cannot download itunes 9 due to an old version of bonjour

Everytime i try to download itunes 9 it tells me an older version of bonjour is interfering with the download. How do I fix this? Bonjour won't let me uninstall on my computer, and I can't just right click to delete the folder.

It says the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

With that one on a Bonjour uninstall, try the following.

Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from Microsoft:

[Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301]

Now run the utility ("Start > All programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that shows up in CleanUp, select any BonJour entries and click "Remove".

Quit out of CleanUp, reboot the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through any better this time?

Now I can install iTunes 9, but when I try to run it I get error message 7.

Gosh, you're getting a rough run with this, Phoebe.

I tend to associate the error 7 with a problem with your Apple Application Support. (iTunes 9.0.x needs a properly-functioning Apple Application Support to work properly.)

Do you get any other error messages along with the 7, Phoebe? In particular, do they mention any problems with any files? If so, what is the name of the file and the file version given for the file?

Okay ... Let's try swapping out both your iTunes and Apple Application Support, and then reinstalling iTunes.

First quit QuickTime and *Safari 4.0.4* if you have either one installed and open. (They both use Apple Application Support, and would interfere with the Apple Application Support uninstall.)

Head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel. Uninstall Apple Application Support. Uninstall iTunes.

(at this point in time, you won't be able to use either QuickTime or Safari 4.0.4, since AAS has been uninstalled.)

Now let's remove any leftover iTunes and AAS program files.

Open the C:\Program files\ folder. Right-click on the "iTunes" folder in there (if it still exists) and select "Delete".

Now (while you're still in Program files) open "Common Files", and then open "Apple". Right-click on the "Apple Application Support" folder in there (if it still exists) and select "Delete".

Empty your recycle bin, restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? If so, does iTunes launch properly this time?

i read the insructions on the page, and they told me to delete the folder after when i delete the program if the folder's still there.
and now i 've deleted all the programs and folders, but i can't delete the bonjour folder.

Hmmmmm.

Let's try checking to see if your XP is recording any additional information about those error 7s, Phoebe.

Can you recall the approximate date and times of some of the error 7s that you've had? If not, try generating a few, taking a careful note of the time that appears on the PC at the time that you get the error message.

Now right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage". Click "Event viewer". Select "Application".

Are there error or warning events showing up at the same times as the error 7s? If so, doubleclick on each such event to bring up a small window with further information on the event.

What *Source, Category, EventID* and Description are you getting for the events correlated with the error 7s?
