Cannot close windows by mouse-click on red button

Hi everybody,

I am very confused and nobody could help me at this point. Like described in the subject, I very often cannot close open windows by clicking on the red button. Its like the window is not active. When I open Mail and some Safari browsers and I want to close them one after the other, it only closes the first window and then its like the next window is inactive. First I have to click somewhere else and then I can close the next window.

It has nothing to do with the mouse. It is also when I use the touchpad. I have already tried to create a new user and even deletet my SSD and reinstalled Snow Leopard but I always have the same Problems after a few hours.

Can anybody help me?

Thanx

Macbook Pro 13", Mac OS X (10.6.2), 4 GB Ram + SSD

The issue is not quitting the app. The issue is with closing the window. I'm well aware of what the red x button does. However, I've had the issue where I would clic multiple times on the red x button and the window would remain open. The issue is with the responsiveness of the interface. In my case, I think the coreaudio service was somehow interfering with normal window operations. It seems to have been resolved by messing with the plist file and starting/stopping the service.

I have the exact same issue as you do. It seems to be a rather rare problem. I've only seen one other thread with this problem reported. Initially, I thought it was a problem with the trackpad, but that's not the case since as you pointed out, the same thing occurs with a mouse. What is strange is that it doesn't seem to occur with all programs. Mostly Safari and Mail show this problem. I've also experienced it with firefox. It seems to occur mostly with applications that consume a fair amount of memory. Small apps like the terminal or calculator don't show this behavior. I wish I new how to fix this.

I believe that I may have found a solution to this problem. I was looking at performance problems threads in this forum and found that the file com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist had been causing performance issues for many people using snow leopard. One person suggested removing the file to improve performance but that causes the system sounds to stop functionning. I have found that simply moving this file to another directory, restarting the coreaudio service, moving the file back to it's location and restarting the coreaudio service again worked to improve responsiveness. It's been 24 hours since I performed this and I haven't notice having issues closing mail or safari. Anyhow, this is easy and very safe to try.

I have the same problem.

When I am having the problem I can, however, minimize ( - ) and maximize ( + ). If I click the gray bar, minimize or maximize the window I can then close it with the X button.

Don't use a mouse, just the touchpad. It seems to happen more often with Mail; that may be because I use that app the most.

Found this thread from March 2010.

I was having the same problem. The red "X" would not be responsive if I accidentally clicked next to it. I would have to move the window and then click the X again. That happens with every button including the plus and minus sign.

Come to find out, it was my Double Clicking Speed....Increase that and you may be ok. Mine was too slow, and after figuring it out, I thought I was slow.

Hope This Helps
Josh
