Thank you Runion!

Okay ... starting work on (b) possibilities.

Before turning to folder permissions issues, I think we'd better quickly check to see if your Windows Installer Service itself is feeling a bit off-color. If it's a bit upset, reregistering the service can be of some help (and it's a pretty quick procedure).

So, try *method 4* from the following document:

[How to resolve Common "Windows Installer" Problems|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175]

Any better luck with an install after reregistering the service?

I finally called Apple support on the phone and got some relief. This worked: Remove itunes, quicktime, apple software update, apple mobile device support, bonjour, and apple application support IN THAT ORDER. Create a (temporary) New User on your system (with admin authorization, or give your guest user authority) and install itunes on that user. Logout of that user, and open itunes in your regular way. When you go back to your own user, the iPod will sync.

Good luck!

Steps to finding my solution:

rename C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER directory (save it)

run itunes setup, but don't click error dialog away yet

go into fresh c:\windows\installer dir and grab a copy of these msi files
(namely the 47MB one which is the itunes installer)

google up "msi files command line options" the second link reveal some of these

drop to a dos prompt and add the /log=c:\ilog.txt to the 47mb msi file and run it

at the bottom of this log is an error about it trying to hitup this key with a blank packagename

This.

Just uninstall everything, in that order in CASE it doesn't work otherwise, I did it in that order even though i didn't have that apple mobile thing.
