HDMI Signal Issue with LG TV

Has anybody seen issues with ATV and LG LCD TVs ? Have mine hooked up to input source HDMI1 on the LG, but when switching to HDMI1 from DTV the LG shows "no signal". ATV is on, and switching the TV off/on again shows the ATV menu and all is well..just an annoyance really but would be good if it could be fixed. Have tried HDMI2 source and same issue occurs. I think its a TV issue not an ATV on. ATV running latest s/w update.

If you're having problems with HDMI connected directly to your TV from your ATV, you could try going through an HDMI switch or an A/V receiver with HDMI ports, if you have one. Changing the hardware connection could relieve the problem it's a compatibility issue specifically between the ATV and your particular make and model of TV (but there's no guarantee it will).

I have the same issue. Before buying a new LG TV, I have a non-HDMI Toshiba 34" HDTV. I connected component to it. Never a "NO SIGNAL" issue.

Since getting a new LG 50PG10 TV and now with HDMI, I have tried 2 cables (1 of which was known good from an LG BluRay Player no less). I have even had it drop while a movie played. I sync and stream from the AppleTV. I have given up and have gone component connection for now. I wouldn't doubt it's an AppleTV problem, I've had it since 2.0 just came out...and it's the only Apple product that I've ever owned that I basically wish I hadn't purchased.

I will definitely wait for the apple tv updates, as always. But I thought I'd pass on this interesting piece of info that may only cloud up our deductions or offer potential solutions to people's woes ! For grins, a co-worker loaned me a DISH Network thick orange HDMI v1.3 cable to try out. So....when I got the NO SIGNAL on the AppleTV while hooked up to my LG 720p Plasma via HDMI1, I swapped to the new cable. I got a signal. The AppleTV screen saver was activated by that time. So, I put back the suspect cable...leaving the TV selected to HDMI1, NO SIGNAL. Hmmmm.....put back the orange cable....signal was back. Then, put back the suspect cable....NO SIGNAL. Then I tried my other known working HDMI cable (also a Philips SWV2432W/27 6ft which has been used on an LG BluRay player to LG TV via HDMI2. I had a signal. I put back the original suspect cable...NO SIGNAL. Wiggled it about 6 inches from the AppleTV connection and I had a flash on the screen and momentary video...then NO SIGNAL. I wiggled it a little more and had a signal that stayed. So...my conclusion....is that given this evidence....it is entirely possible I have a bad intermittent cable. So, tomorrow I head back to Fry's for a replacement cable.

On the other hand, I can honestly say that I wouldn't be surprised if the issue repeats, given that I really didn't get any extended viewing in while performing this experiment. But, the experiment and the "random no signals" I got a few days back before going strictly component, could totally be explained by a bad cable.

I'll let everyone know my results with the new cable.

Also...from what I've gather on those HDMI settings, under Video and Audio....I think the HDMI settings are strictly for color boost/subtraction, etc. I don't think I've read definitively that they are for handshaking.

If it is the cable, I can just hear Video Store Salesmen all over the world saying "Now you know why you need to buy the $50 HDMI cable!" 🙂 <No, thanks, I'll stay with the reasonable less than $20 cables>

A category 1 HDMI cable certification only guarantees performance up to a bandwidth of 75 MHz (2 1/4 Gbps) which means it can be used with 1080i/720p output. To guarantee performance at 1080p one requires category 2 certification. So yes there certainly are factors other than bad cables that should be taken into account when considering cabling.

A bad cable may also work at reduced bandwidths where it may not at higher bandwidths that are technically within its specification. Greater colour compression can reduce bandwidth over the same resolution.

A category 1 cable may work with 1080p (but there's no guarantee) and some (bad) cables may work with one device and not another.

I won't argue the point with you, I'd rather anyone who's interested or needs confirmation of these points to look them up themselves.

Well just to add to the confusion I just did a factory restore on my LG TV (a 37LF66 37" 1080p) and ATV now seems to respond when switching to its HDMI input ! Have tested switching off/on TV, restarting ATV etc and so far so good. I have no idea why this should make a difference - cable setup etc is the same - but I'm not complaining !

The problem is with ATV. I have mine connected via a NAD T-175 PreAmp to my Kuro 50". I use 3 other devices with the same cable and ports- THEY all work.
So Apple need to comply with the proper specifications as outlayed by Intel (HDCP). When the the Hi-Fi shops rave on about cable, they are full of s**t. People talking about skin effect etc.- you may see it on a CRO, but you ain't gonna hear/see it. It is not always the cable- we're talking digital.
I am an electrical tech and the biggest issue is the omission of strain relief on the connector- ie. like what DVI was 20 yrs ago (2 locking screws)- HDMI is dragging the 8-ball, and v1.4 will be out soon- which is basically ethernet. It is an example of how DRM screws people up after paying tens of thousands for their equipment.
Apple TV cannot output a proper 1080p signal despite it's claims- and you should return your ATV 1st. Why does everyone trust Apple so much. ATV and Time Capsule are both woeful releases.
