How to connect airport express to Sony Bravia XBR9?

Hi all, I need advice how to set up ethernet connection to DLNA-enabled Sony Bravia KDL52XBR9. I have one airport express connected to cable modem in a study which provides wireless connection for my MacPro and my iPhone. Sony Bravia is in the next room. I have TwonkyMedia software on my Mac to configure connections.

My question is about available options:

1.Buy another AX, plug it in power outlet next to TV and use ethernet port in Sony.
2. Buy Airport Extreme, set it up next to my Mac and use current AX next to my TV using Sony ethernet port.
3. Use a powerline kit to connect the two.

Any hint in the direction of the most efficient and stable option would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

MacAximX (or others too!)

Can you detail what you did to get the Express to work as the bridge.

I have an extreme as my base station, a new 52XBR9 and an extra express that I could use as the bridge. Seems like it should be easy, but I received a response from Sony when I asked this question and they said the extreme to express would not work on Sony's Bravia TV's as the bridge and they only recommend the linksys wet610n.

Thanks!

If you have an AirPort Express(n)...not the older b/g version....and you have "enabled ethernet clients" on the device during setup, when the AirPort Express (AX) joins your wireless network, the ethernet port should be active.

If you are unsure which version you have, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from the Express to your computer and open Airport Utility. (Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities"

You will see a message that AirPort Utility has found an AX with 802.11n

If you get a message that AirPort Utility has found an AX with 802.11, you have the older version of the AX and the ethernet port is not active.

You can test to see if you are getting an ethernet signal to the Express by temporarily turning off the wireless on your laptop and connecting to the Express with your computer with the ethernet cable.

If you can get an internet connection this way, you are all set to connect to the Sony. All you need for the Sony is an ethernet connection with internet access. The support guy at Sony was either reading a prepared script or he did not know.

If you also have an Apple b/g base station as your main router, it would be possible to configure both in what is known as a WDS arrangement. In this setup, the ethernet port on your b/g Express will be active.

But, the key here is that you must also have an Apple base station like an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule or another AirPort Express to be able to set this up.

I have successfully connected my new Sony TV to the Internet using what Sercher has described as option 1. My problem is everything works fine for 5 or 10 minutes and then the connection is dropped. I then have to reboot everything to get back online. Here is my setup: Comcast cable modem to ethernet connection on my Airport Extreme (it's an older square "n" - no dual mode). The Extreme is setup to "create a wireless network" with the "allow this network to be extended" box checked. I have "extended the the wireless network" with a new Airport Express (n) and have checked the "allow wireless clients" box checked. I have used the ethernet connection on the Airport Express to connect the TV. Initially everything works fine, although I get a little tiny picture on some of the Sony TV video functions. Netflix works fine for a short period of time. Neither my iMac or MacBook Air have a problem streaming video, uninterrupted. Both are using an the same wireless setup I am using for the TV. How can I stabilize the connection to the TV?

+How can I stabilize the connection to the TV?+

Can you run a test by temporarily turning off the wireless on your computer and connecting from the AirPort Express to your computer using an ethernet cable?

Log on to the internet and keep the connection "active" with audio/video streaming or downloads, etc.

Does your computer also drop the connection after 5-10 minutes?

Thank you for your reply. I did what you suggested and let a Netflix movie run for about 40 minutes on my computer through the ethernet connection. Everything worked perfectly. I then went back to the original setup - Airport Express to TV ethernet connection - and everything worked great there too. I ran a movie for an hour with no interruptions. The only thing I changed since posting my question was the multicast rate setting in Airport Utility >Wireless>Wireless Option. I changed the rate setting on the Airport Extreme from 6Mbps to 24 Mbps. I have no idea what this change did and it may not be why things are working now. It may be I had some type of interference which is not occurring now. At least I know it is not a compatibility problem with the Sony TV. For now, I'll just keep watching to see if things change. Thanks again.

no matter what i try i can't get this to work, i'm obviously doing something wrong. i have both airport extreme and airport express. i am trying to set up airport express as a bridge on my sony xbr9 and have no clue what i am doing wrong. i been using airport extreme for a few months now and have no problems with my wireless devices such as PS3, macbook and XBOX. When I connect the airport express to my TV for whatever reason the airport utility does not recognize it. when i connect it directly to the extreme base I see it. I go through the set up but when it comes time to plug it back to the TV I get nothing. I think I need a step by step process. i am running windows 7 on the main computer where the extreme is running. thanks to anyone who responds.

I am no expert on this, but here is what I found when hooking up the Sony TV. Both the Extreme and my Express are "n"'s. I bought a new Express (I had an old g model) to avoid the WDS setup which I understand really reduces throughput bandwidth.

The Extreme is set to "create a network" and the Express is set to "join a wireless network" with the allow wireless clients checked. With the Express linked to the TV through the ethernet connection, the Airport Utility sees both. If yours doesn't show may be one of your other setting isn't matching. When I go to the TV, the internet setting that works is is the wired connection not the wireless bridge setting. I have no idea why this is so since It really is a wireless setup. But at least its connected. Hope this helps.
