Updates for Mac OsX 10.0.0

Hi Francisco,

I'm slightly confused as to what you are trying to do but I wanted to post a link to the Mac OS X 10.0: 10.0.4 Update and Before You Install Information.

I think, though, that what you are asking is if there is a link to a later upgrade and not an "update" to 10.0. Is that correct?

Are you trying to upgrade the computer from 10.0 Cheetah to 10.4 Tiger?

It is very important for those helping here to know the model that you are trying to upgrade/update the OS on. Is it an older G3 iMac etc. and if you could post the size of the processor (Ghz) and amount of RAM installed. Any of that information can be found by clicking on the blue apple menu in the top menu bar.

Here are the various OS X systems that can be installed on your iMac.

Mac OS X 10.0 (Cheetah) went to 10.0.4
Mac OS X 10.1 (Puma) went to 10.1.5
Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) went to 10.2.8
Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) went to 10.3.9
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) went to 10.4.11

Each one of these OSs was a paid upgrade and you can't download the base system, but you can download (free from Apple) updates to the base system to get to the final version. If you want to install Tiger, you must buy the base install DVD.

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

Since the iMac you list in your profile is obviously not the computer about which you are asking, we are left to guess. My guess is that you are talking about the iMac 2001 (Snow), which was introduced in July 2001 and discontinued: January 2002 (700 MHz), March 2003 (500, 600 MHz). It was initially released with Mac OS 9.1 (Mac OS ROM 7.5.1) and Mac OS X 10.0.4 (4P13) and later with Mac OS 9.2 and Mac OS X 10.1, 10.1.2, 10.1.3, or 10.2. If that seems right, please confirm.

The next area where we need greater clarity, as has been asked by both LittleShoulder and Tom is, exactly what do you wish to do. The computer described above will support up to 10.4.11 (Tiger). Is that where you want to go? You wrote

some years ago I made a backup copy for 10.4 and when I try to install it the iMac ejects the installer disk.

Does that mean that you are trying to install from a copied install disk? Was it a backup copy of the Full Retail Version, or was it a computer specific installer? What happened to the original install disk, the one of which you made a backup copy? Is it available for use?

Your responses to these, and the questions asked by Tom and LS will enble us better to understand your situation and make suggestions on how to proceed.

It was not our intention to discourage you from upgrading your old iMac. Many people run the latest software supported on older hardware. Of course, Tiger disks are difficult to find and unreasonably expensive when you do find them. That said, your old iMac probably has some useful life left if you are able to update and upgrade it. Please do post back if you have further questions or comments.
