G4 MDD won't start after a power outage

My trusty G4 MDD Dual 1.25 GHz (M8570) has been a true workhorse for the past 6+ years and has performed almost flawlessly. However, I just experienced my first major problem with it, and am in search of some guidance. I’ve spent a few hours reading through the numerous topics here that I believe to be germane to my issue, and have collected lots of useful information and made copius notes, but unfortunately, I still haven’t yet found a solution. So please bear with me!

This past weekend, my neighborhood suffered an 11-hour power outage due to a windstorm. I normally keep my MDD plugged in when it’s not in use, but not turned on or in sleep mode. The power cord is connected to a decent, commercial-grade Isobar power strip with a surge-protection feature.

When I went to use the computer on Monday morning, it wouldn’t start. The MDD’s power button lights up when pressed, and goes out when I release pressure on it. My 20-inch Cinema Display’s (A1038) power button also lights up when touched, and goes out when I remove my finger.

I initially suspected that the PRAM battery might’ve gotten drained during the power outage, so I replaced it with a new one measuring 3.6 volts as part of a logic board reset. When that failed to achieve a normal start-up, I performed a PMU reset. Still nothing.

While I normally turn the computer on using the Cinema Display’s power button, I had read about problems with the MDD’s power button board, and per a suggestion found here, I attempted to start it with an almost-new Apple USB keyboard with a built-in power button (model M2452), but that didn’t work.

I’ve read a lot about power supply failures here on the G4 MDDs, and am hoping/praying that this isn’t the problem with my machine. But this raised two questions:

a) Since the Cinema Display gets its power from the MDD via a 28-volt ADC connection, can I presume that since the display’s power light illuminates when touched that the MDD’s power supply is functioning normally?

b) Does the red LED on the logic board illuminate whenever power is supplied to the computer, or only when the computer is on and running? The LED is not illuminated right now, presumably because I can’t get the machine started.

I don’t own a multi-tester, but I guess my next step would be to purchase one and start checking things, beginning with the +5V trickle charge from the power supply. I also own a G4 Sawtooth that could be cannibalized as part of a rescue operation, but I don’t believe that there are many (if any) interchangeable components between the two machines.

Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

Well, another G4 MMD 1.42 GHz machine bit the dust. Mine stopped working back in early November-09 just like most everyone else's did in this thread. There was a power outage and when I went to turn mine back on after a few hours of being off -- no go. Push the power button, and it would only glow as long as you held the button.

So, long story short, I started using an older G4 PowerBook that I use just for traveling. The holidays were about to kick in so I put my trusty G4 MMD in the corner of my office figuring I would do my new computer shopping after the holidays. There it sat until just a few days ago when I was getting ready to pull out the hard drives so I could extract a few needed files.

Well, I thought, heck just plug it in and see what happens before doing the surgery. Guess what? It fired up just like nothing ever happened!! The clock & date were wrong, but that didn't surprise me.

So, I couldn't believe it fixed it self, I did a few reboots and a shut downs. Everything was working.

Next I went to put it back in my home office and get everything back to normal . . . and suddenly I was back to the problem again!! OK, what's going on??!! I was getting VERY frustrated, so I started hitting the power button VERY hard with my thumb (I learned this from the TV repair man).

And PRESTO! It fired up again.

So, how can it be a PSU?

Maybe a faulty power switch??

Well, I'm posting this message from a "once thought dead" G4 MMD 1.42 DP. Halleluyah!!

When you went on vacation and shut your Mac down, did you also unplug it or turn off the power strip it was connected to? If, so your PRAM battery may be or close to being spent.
The PRAM battery is what keeps the parameter RAM settings stored on your Mac.
This is a Half size AA battery inside your G4.
If needs to receive trickle power when your Mac is shutdown to keep it rejuvenated.
It your Mac was completely disconnected from AC power the battery has probably been discharged to a point where it is no longer functioning as it should and needs to be replaced.

Radio Shack carry these at a fairly exorbitant price. You can order one from here fairly cheaply.

This may cure your ills.

Hi all,
Yes, I think there is a hidden expiration date on MDD PSUs. For about the last 3 months my computer would not start up after being shut down for more than 15-20 mins. Unit is on a UPS. Apple Hardware test says everything is fine. Reset the PMU and PRAM multiple times. My workaround has been to press the power button (after it has been shut down for a while), unplug the power plug and immediately plug it back in. I would press the power button again and (most times) the computer will start, even though the power button won't light for a second or two. Sometimes it would start, run for a second or 2 (fans on) then turn off. I'd repeat the procedure and it would boot. Lately (today), computer booted with the usual procedure and then while surfing I lost power (or connection?) to my usb keyboard and mouse. That has never happened before. Thinking it a fluke I restarted and continued surfing and it happened again, so I figured the wisest course is to shut down, order a rebuilt (NOT used) 360 Watt PSU ($139 including $30 rebate if I return the old PSU for credit) on Ebay. Don't have a multimeter. I'm searching here for the "capacitor fix" I saw mentioned. Any other suggestions appreciated. I'll post again on success or failure...

I have a Power MAC G4 Dual 1.25. I now have this same problem. It was asleep overnight and when we tried however over night the power went out. When we tried powering on in the morning it would boot briefly. It would get as far as the chime as it boots but would immediately shut down. Now it won't even boot up. The power button illuminates briefly and goes out.
The unit is a good 6+ years old and and I have replaced the power supply TWICE already thus the machine has gone through 3 PSU's over the years (the original and the two refurbished ones).

I'm at the point where it is not cost effective to keep replacing these as they are obviously the weakest link.
I am thinking that the way to go is to pay the extra and go for a mac mini and put the hard drives into an external enclosure. A relatively new MAC Mini has a ton extra horsepower than these power MAC G4's however the problem there is the mini DVI connector to drive my 23" Cinema Display which requires a $100 adapter.

Add me to the list. Last night the power went out and stayed off for about 12 hours. When it came back on, I pressed the power button on the Apple Display and it lit briefly, but nothing happened. Pressing the button on the front on the tower gets me the same result. I opened the case and pressed the power button. The fans move for a split second, but then nothing. Tried to reset the board and took out the battery for a while. Put the battery back. Same thing. Pulled the RAM chips. Disconnected the optical drive. Same thing. Should I just assume it is a bad power supply?
