I'm having a similar problem that I can't restore files from trash and my mac doesn't have putback option.
I accidentally delete images from my external drive (from 'Finder' -> 'All Images'). I didn't know that 'All Images' in 'Finder' means every images from every drive that connect to my mac book. Now there are 4,148 items in my trash waiting to be send back to its 195 original folders.
Please help because many folders contains important moment like grandma funeral, sister wedding, etc.

The "put back" feature is a Snow Leopard feature. It isn't available in earlier versions of OS X.

The best thing to do now is to boot up from your Leopard DVD, and restore from the last Time Machine backup that was made before those images were moved to the Trash. Or, if you weren't using Time Machine, tell what backup program you were using and I'll see if I can help.
