Custom photo & ringtone set in Contacts not working for iPhone 3GS wife

Hello. I've got a iPhone 3G. Previously, my wife had a Verizon phone and service. Now, she has an iPhone 3GS. Here's the odd part that I need help with. Previously, with the Verizon photo, she'd call me and my iPhone would show the photo I set for her in Contacts and would play a custom ringtone for her. Now when she calls me her photo (which appears in Contacts) does not show up on my iPhone and the custom ringtone which I have set for her does not work and I get only the default sound. The custom ringtone is selected in my Contacts as the sound for her, the ringtone is on my iPhone and I can play it. The ringtone is selected and syncs with iTunes.

So, everything appears to be set correctly but a call from my wife does not trigger the settings I've always had for her. I'm stumped. BTW, everyone else who calls me does trigger their photo (if I've got one for them) and their custom ringtone.

Thanks for any and all help. I've power cycled my iPhone and that didn't correct anything.

Oddly, no photo appears. There is a photo set in Contacts but it does not appear. All I see is my startup wallpaper. So, her photo does not appear and the custom ringtone (which is less than 40 seconds by the way) which is on my iPhone and properly set in Contacts does not get activated but, rather, my default ringtone kicks in. Again, both the photo and the ringtone had worked in the past and other people's photos and ringtone still work fine on my incoming calls.

Great question roamingnome!

I check her settings and found that when the Apple Store set her phone number they used a leading number "1" whereas the way I had it in my contacts was (XXX) XXX-XXXX. So, I reentered her phone number - on her new 3GS so it is now identical to what is in my Contacts. Alas, a call to my phone from hers still did not bring up her photo from Contacts nor did the set custom ringtone work. I'm stumped further. Thanks for your suggestions.

Mystery solved roamingnome! Everything I told you was true but I found the problem. My wife's contact information is under her name. However the same phone number for her contact info is also under the name "ICE" plus our last name. "ICE" is a Contacts listing that emergency rescue people suggest we have on our phones. In case you don't know, rescue folks check cell phones for "ICE" with stands for "In Case of Emergency" and it tells them whom to contact.

Since my wife is listed both as herself and ICE as two separate contacts, the phone number is the same. For some reason when she called me on her new iPhone 3GS it pulled the custom stuff from ICE and not from her regular contact profile. Oddly, that never happened before when she had Verizon and an LG phone as both profiles remained the same.

So, I simple assigned the same photo and same custom ringtone to my ICE contact and that solved the problem. Thanks for your suggestions and help along the way. You got me drilling down to the contact level. I then noticed on my "recents" that ICE and my wife's name both were there but only ICE came up on my "recents" when my wife called me. I thought you'd like to know the resolution. Problem solved!
