iPhone 3G and 3GS Bluetooth

The only type of bluetooth connection between your computer and an iPhone available is for tethering. Is that what you mean? What firmware version is installed in both iPhones?

I believe Apple updated the Bluetooth chipset in the 3GS. But I don't know exactly what Bluetooth protocols were added. Stereo audio for Bluetooth headsets was one capability I understand.

The 3G and 3GS have the same bluetooth profiles.

The iPhone does not support any bluetooth file transfer protocols - just the handsfree protocol (HSP and HFP) stereo streaming (A2DP) and the PBA protocol (allows other devices to scan/browse iPhones contact list).

There are apps that offer wifi file transfer, but like all apps on the iPhone, they only have access to their own stored files, not those created or stored by other apps.

You are talking about BT devices "seeing" other devices which they can't necessarly pair with.

iPhone BT profiles in the 3G and 3Gs with firmware 3.x include: HFP (hands free for telephone), PHAB (phone book access), A2DP (stereo music), AVRCP (remote control for stereo headset), and PAN (personal area network for tethering).

iPhones don't sopport FTP - file transfer protocol via Bluetooth. Airsharing and other apps like it connect via internet - cell data network or WiFi, not Bluetooth.

Can you connect your 3G BT with a headset? If not, do the basic troubleshooting - reset phone, reset all setting, restore from backup, restore as new.

I'm not clear by what you mean by "sees the 3G". Are you saying you can pair a Nokia with a 3G?? This may be an aberration of how the Nokia reports the presence of another BT device even though it is not compatible for pairing.

There is no way you will be able to pair an iPhone with a Nokia - there is no compatible Bluetooth profile.

On re-reading your posts, I get the impression you are confusing the way 2 devices communicate via Bluetooth vs. WiFi.

Bluetooth is a short range direct connection between the devices which requires compatible BT profiles installed in each device, and both devices to be "paired".

WiFi does not connect 2 devices directly. Each device connects only to a WiFi router. The devices communicate either through a local network or the internet, even if both devices are connected to the same router. WiFi communication also requires correct network settings.

As was said before. Iphone does not support any kind of bluetooth file tranfer protocols, even if you can pair them. Here is an example, that it is possible to pair and can do nothing. Just now, I paired a O2 XDA Orbtt 2 (WM 6.1 professional) with the Iphone, passkey and all. However, I cannot do anything cause there are no services on the Iphone(example, file transfer protocol). They are paired, secured and that is it. They just stare at each other 🙂

also tried with a PC, paired and all but no services. Again with a bluetooth capable printer (Canon pixma MP620 wiht BT dongle) paired and all, but nothing I can do.
