Avery DesignPro

I want to make custom food labels for some Christmas presents. Thinking of using an Avery peel & stick product.

Should I download AveryDesignPro or use their online software? I don't have any graphics-capable software, strictly iWork09. Opinions, please.

Hi sciacca

You have a Mac and the software that came with it.

Pages can do it, [Avery Pro for Mac|http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Templates-%26-Software/Software/Avery-Desi gnPro-for-Mac.htm?N=4294967083&refchannel=3980ac83ae70a110VgnVCM1000002118140aRC RD] (free) can do it, most any word processor can do it.

There is a lot of good and often free or cheap software available:

Try them.

+"Best to Test"+

DL it and see.

What do you mean by "fancier label than iWork will allow me to create" ?

You can do a great deal with Pages, probably more than Avery DesignPro for Mac. Which as a Designer I'd rate as typical PC quality and taste.

You use specific bitmap and vector editors anyway to create fine graphics and all the files they create import into Pages where you assemble and out put the work. Just as with any DTP application.

Peter's answer to your question may not be the one you want to hear but it is the best possible answer. I could tell you that I think Avery's program is awful - and I do. But my wife thinks it is quite good. So, there you have two opinions...what good did they do you?

The program is free. You obviously have Internet access. The program isn't going to ruin your computer. Download it. Use it. Make your own opinion!

Your sarcasm is noted. You may have noticed that Peter and I have a few blue bars lit up under our names - that's because we've answered a lot of questions and helped a lot of people over the years but you happen to have asked a question that is very hard to answer. On the one hand I can say, "You own a Mac. Downloading and installing software on a Mac is simple. On the Mac, installing software is almost never dangerous - I can probably list the number of truly awful and dangerous Mac programs on one hand with at least the thumb left over. In truth, if you download a program that is listed on Macupdate or VersionTracker it is almost certainly safe and if you aren't sure, read some of reviews about the program. Indeed, as Peter said, both download sites are a good place to go if you want to know what users think."

Now, having gotten that out of the way, the real question is, "Is the Avery label program a worthwhile download?" That is the question Peter and I really cannot answer for you. I don't think it is particularly good. It works only with Avery labels, it has some annoying shortcomings, and I'd rather grab a template for the labels I've bought and design my own labels using Indesign and Photoshop. My wife has no graphic arts background and while she uses Photoshop to do some basic photo editing, she isn't very knowledgeable about it or Indesign. But does that information really do you any good? And given that you can download the program and try it for yourself (the joys of *try before you buy!* ) why ask? Just give it a try and see if you like it.

Sarcasm? My reason for turning to the support forums is to get input from others as to their experience with the Avery product. Blue bars are of no importance to me. What impresses me is the way information is communicated. You and Peter know more than me, that's fine. I thought the support forums were for all Mac users. I'll think twice before I post to these forums in the future. After the holidays I'll read up on points.

1. You are asking about a program that is not Pages in the Pages 09 forum.

2. I asked you why you said "I'd like a fancier label than iWork will allow me to create." You never responded.

3. I pointed you to a list of alternative software

4. Avery Design Pro is within your easy reach, as is the other software, but you are disinclined to do the obvious which is grab it and play with it.

5. You are sarcastic.

We are looking on with bewildered bemusement.

If this was Facebook I would poke you and see if that would stir you out of your self induced helplessness. Would it?
