Internet connection lost after sleep - Ethernet

I have just started using a new router (a Linksys). My problem is that after the iMac comes out of sleep I cannot get an internet connection using ethernet. It is not the router, a PC connected at the same time does not lose its connection and the internet light on the router stays lit.

When I lose the connection I cannot access the router's web page @ 192.168.1.1. The admin login box appears but with a name that relates to a previous router I used. I assume that this is part of the problem.

Any ideas?

I just started having the same problem with my Mac Mini using 10.7.1

it started to happen after I tehered my iPod during an internet outage

I gave up Windows because of computer sleep issues and now I have it on a Mac: I am very disappointed

I can assure you this is a software, not hardware issue and Apple should have fixed it by now: otherwise I see no advantage to Mac over Windows

this is big for me: I put the computer to sleep several times a day/night and count on it waking quickly: losing network connectivity with no support is inexcuseable

FWIW, I moved my Airport Extreme further away from my iMac and I seem to have less frequent loss of internet connection upon awakening. It still happens, but doesn't seem to be as often. I've also noticed that I can turn my iMac's WiFi on and then change my location, then turn WiFi off, sleep my computer and upon re-awakening, I will have regained my ethernet connection. It's a pain in the patutey, but has worked so far.

I'm having DNS lookup issues after wake-from-sleep, although Airport is fine for me.

I have IPv6 set OFF and still have the problem so that's not it.

I have found that touching the "Location" seems to reawaken things. Go to Apple menu -> Location for this. It seems that even re-choosing the current location works (i.e it does not have to be an actual change)

It seems that web browsers all have the problem, although other apps seems to work, such as Mail. Safari just says that you're not connected to the internet (not hugely helpful) but Google Chrome says specifically that it's a DNS lookup failure.

yes it is the Time Capule that is the problem

My Mac Mini upgraded to Lion with hard wire ethernet began to lose IP connection after waking about 2-3 weeks ago, about the time I started getting alerts from the Time capsule saying it was full and would start to over write earliest saves

Last night I unplugged the Time Capsule and have not lost IP upon wake since

I also noticed the Mac goes to sleep immediately now: not delayed a few seconds as when the Time Capsule was running

I figure I will run the capsule during the day only while the Mac is always running

I don't want to unplug my Time Capsule, since it's my router.

However, I turned off the automatic back up feature months ago, because it interfered with my recording radio programs off the internet. Doing that is no help with the losing connection after sleep problem.

As to the post before last, is there any way to deal with a DNS lookup failure? Why should that happen when waking from sleep. AND, there is no "location" on my Apple menu.

I hate to rock the boat but I have not used Time Capsule in over 3 months (and I never used the automatic back up) and I am still having the problem. The only temporary fix that has worked for me is resetting the PRAM which lasts 2-3 weeks.

My mail is affected as are my internet browsers. Neither one is able to connect to internet until I restart the computer.

Reading through the posts it is obvious this problem is happening for both ethernet and wifi connected computers.

This problem reminds me why I got away from Windows...

The DNS lookup may be failing simply because the network connectivity went away. My problem occurs irrespective of Time Machine backups being activated or not yet.

Craig, how long are you waiting after awaking your machine? My network connections go green again about 2-3 minutes after waking the machine. Both the ethernet and wi-fi go green at the same time.

This really looks like the networking stack in Lion just takes longer to wake from sleep than the rest of the OS. Annoying, mostly when I want to use the iMac as an iTunes server but it has gone to sleep and I have to go manually wake it up.

That's nice, but I am still running snow leopard and the problem did not vanish on my iMac. I am up-to-date, so presumably I got the same update you did. In fact, I downloaded it with the newest iTunes the other day. (And that new iTunes makes connecting to my Airport Expresses unstable. Sometimes it will connect to them, and sometimes not. I suppose that there is no connection between the two problems, but perhaps there is.)

I let the iMac sleep overnigh only, so I face the problem only once a day. I've learned to be patient, as it goes away eventually and (as many have pointed out) it does not affect iTunes. Still, it would be satisfying to solve this puzzle.

Reading all the messages on this thread indicates to me that the problem may not just be Apple centred.

My problems are identical - i.e. loss of internet connection on return from sleep. In my case I can initiate a LAN connection repair, which fails, but allows me to reset my LAN adapter, which always works. I have had my computer for years and the problems started when I changed my basic Avast antivirus software to their new Internet Pro edition. This produced random failures on waking from sleep. I removed that and went to a McAfee internet and antivirus program and it worked without problems for many weeks. Now the LAN access fails consistently on wake from sleep. Although my LAN adaptor retains the ip address of the router, it does not see it until reset. A reboot always resets it ok.

I am considering clearing out my antivirus again to see if that clears the problem again. I get the impression that some kind of software update or even dare I say it a virus itself may be to blame. I recently changed my keep alive battery just incase it was losing a bit of power although all the main settings were ok in the bios, it didn't help. By the way I am running a 64bit Window Vista set up connected to a BT hub. My other pcs using 32bit XP work fine. I wonder why I should have the same problem as yourselves.

Sitting here in front of my 27in iMac 2.8 i7 running Lion. With no network access after waking from sleep. I put it to sleep manually from apple menu last night. Shows Ethernet con is active. This has happened repeatedly and sporadically in past. I believe sometimes I may have mis blamed my Fios router. But my iPad was sitting here notifying me of incoming mail so I know the router was up and working. Just dropping a note to varify occurrence of problem for board admins if anyone cares.
