Internet connection lost after sleep - Ethernet

I have just started using a new router (a Linksys). My problem is that after the iMac comes out of sleep I cannot get an internet connection using ethernet. It is not the router, a PC connected at the same time does not lose its connection and the internet light on the router stays lit.

When I lose the connection I cannot access the router's web page @ 192.168.1.1. The admin login box appears but with a name that relates to a previous router I used. I assume that this is part of the problem.

Any ideas?

Either the security update or the Firmware update caused my problems. I'm really irritated by this. I just bought my new 15" Macbook Pro i7 to replace my 2-year-old Macbook Pro (which was stolen) 3 days ago. It was working really well, as expected, until last night when I installed the Firmware and Software Updates. Now, when my computer goes to sleep, I have to restart my Macbook in order to access the network. This isn't a feasible workaround.

Hi,

I think I may have sorted this one!

I have been suffering this "wake up from sleep then no internet" issue for many months. I posted some months ago in response to the original thread, and have been reading each update hoping someone will come across the solution.

To recap - my issue is web-browsing, email, itunes store etc will not connect to the internet after may iMac 24inch wakes up from a sleep. Some apps like skype still work though. Only a full reboot would fix it. I connect to the internet using wifi via a timecapsule. I use all mac products - iMac 24, wireless via a timecapsule and backup using timemachine and time capsule. I have an apple tv synching in, along with multple ipads, ipods and an iphone. I run Snowl-leapord.

Finally I spoke with a local mac engineer from Mac1. He said he comes across this problem and came across it with PC's as well in a previous job. He said it was to do with a build up of charge in the system cuased by spikes in the power supply (we get a lot of power failures where I live - about once every couple of months). I said I use a surge protector so should be ok. He said it didn't help. My heart fell as I thought this sounded like it was not the problem as the internet issue was so intermittent and only affected some of the apps.

I asked how to fix it. He said easy - just power down the mac. Then turn it off at the wall. Then unplug it. push the power button on the mac as if you are trying to turn it on. Do this a few times (ie hit the power button a few times). This will discharge any remaining power in the Mac. Then leave it for about half an hour to allow any further power to dissipate.

Plug it back in, power up and way you go. I did this and amazingly have not had any problems since. With confidence I then upgraded from Snow-Leopard to Lion and everything is humming along nicely. So far no more sleep-wakeup internet issues.

I will let you all know straight away if the problem comes back!

I would also be very interested to hear if this helps any of you. Good luck!

It didn't solve this problem for me, though doubtless this getting rid of built up charge routine did my iMac some good somehow.

This problem is not a BIG problem, since I only put the iMac to sleep when I go to sleep, but it is puzzling and annoying. iTunes is connected to the internet when we wake up, so I can put on internet radio, even if I can't connect via Safari. And if I wait a while, Safari will connect too. But if I try to get to the internet via Safari just after the iMacwakes from sleep, it tells me I have no internet connection. And I can't download mail either.

Equally annoying is no longer being able to connect to my Airport Expresses using the newest iTunes. A couple of signs that maybe Apple is no longer on top of its game, or is putting its best people elsewhere.

let me update my findings to possibly help others

Mac Mini 10.7.1 (with security update) wired Ethernet with Time machine for backup: Netgear router

I have suffered the loss of ethernet after wake from sleep and it is a huge problem for me: it is precisely why I migrated from Windows

anyway since I unplugged the Time Machine it has solved the problem: I am positive this is the issue for me.

Luckily I use a separate device as a router so I can isolate this issue: I plug the Time Machine in every few days for backup: if I leave it connected I have issue with delay in going to sleep and the inevitable loss of ethernet once awake: it is 100% repeatable

why Apple does not fix this is beyond me: I hope it is not a sign of what is to come without Steve Jobs: if he saw this he would have been all over it to fix it

In the meantime Windows fixed their issue and I can put WIN machines to sleep/ wake reliably

One (or even many) bug is not a sign of anything except the realities of software development. Apple *always* has a bunch of reported issues that haven't been solved yet, and it always will. This is not a matter Steve not being there to jump all over the issue, or any other conspiracy theory. Just from the list of descriptions in this thread it's clear that the problem is subtle and varies quite a bit. These things take time to reproduce, track down and fix. Over time issues are addressed and new ones arise.

The electrical charge notion is an interesting one -- I happened to get a ups at the same time as the security update so it's not impossible that it was the solution.

I have had similar problem with my new iMac.

when it wakes up from sleep it was not connecting to my WD network drive for Time Machine or shares plus not seeing other computers. However internet connection was fine in all programs.

I just took a guess and unticked the 'wake for network access' under the Energy Saver options.

Did this yesterday and no problems so far.

An update on my success so far in overcoming the problem of no internet after sleep on my pc. I have been leaning towards suspecting the internet/antivirus software, because the problem first appeared after moving from a pure antivirus software to one that did internet protection as well. Disabling both the firewall and internet monitoring on both my Avast and similarly later on my BTNetprotect(McAfee) did not cure the problem. However on both, after uninstalling their software, the problem disappeared. I am now running Kaspersky and no problem yet. I cannot crow too loud so far as McAfee ran for a few weeks after installation before failing. The fact that a reset of my network adapter after coming from sleep always solved the immediate problem, would seem to indicate that the antivirus sofware accepted a new ip address from the hub and allowed communication, whereas just coming out of sleep somehow left it isolated behind the firewall. I don't even know if you apple users utilise antivirus software, so I won't bother you anymore, but I did wonder if there was any commonality with your problems.

Add me to the list. First lost Internet connection on morning wake occurred this morning.Got it back by Apple/Restart... from the menu bar.

Hope it won't persist, but reading this thread my shoulder are slumping. Got lots of ideas to try if it does though.

Mid-2011 27" iMac new April 2011.

Working beautifully until today (October 2011).

Updated to Lion first day it came out.

All software updates since then, including Lion for iCloud last week first day it came out.

Wireless connection to home network.

ISP modem/wireless router in the basement.

Time Capsule hard wired to iMac for backups only. Interestingly before I restarted the iMac this morning I noticed that "Backup Delayed" -- haven't seen that before, but have not been looking for it.

Signed on to the Time Capsule with the iPad couple of days ago using the new Airport Utility app, but did not change any settings.

Standing by, fingers crossed. Like others, I switched to Apple to get away from the constant hassles and enjoy the magic.

For the last three days now, when I have awakened my iMac from sleep in the morning, I have found that it was connected to the internet. So my problem has disappeared (at least for three days), with no effort on my part. Is anyone else out there having the same experience?

I believe that I recently updated iTunes, but I watched for the first couple of days after the download and saw that I still had the connection problem. Nevertheless, I suppose that there must have been some sort of delayed effect connected to that downlaod.

First off I have not had a problem losing my internet connection after sleep for about 2 weeks. HOWEVER, now my Mac Mail drops offline. This occurs while I am using the program or using the computer for other functions and it also occurs after awakening from sleep. I am unsuccessful getting the program back online using the Take Account Online function. I have to restart the mail program and even then it doesn't work everytime.

I did delete the account and then made a new account (not recommended since you will lose everything in your email) and that worked...for about a day.

Back to restarting my computer to get my Mail program to get back online albeit it is only temporarily online.

Anyone else having this problem?

SURE AM HAVING IT

MY MBP 2011 is doing it now since i installed lion a week ago. every few minutes even when active it just drops then searches unsuccessfully for wifi connection or loses internet.

I fixed similar generations ago by setting packet size from MTU=1400 to 1200. Cant figure how to do this with my inrternode supplied billion router. can change it alright but wont enter as complians about ?vci/v..=8/35.
