Internet connection lost after sleep - Ethernet

I have just started using a new router (a Linksys). My problem is that after the iMac comes out of sleep I cannot get an internet connection using ethernet. It is not the router, a PC connected at the same time does not lose its connection and the internet light on the router stays lit.

When I lose the connection I cannot access the router's web page @ 192.168.1.1. The admin login box appears but with a name that relates to a previous router I used. I assume that this is part of the problem.

Any ideas?

Just add me to this one, new 27" iMac i7 with OS 10.7.2 connected via ethernet to a router. Seems like the system is losing the internet connection each time it comes back from sleep. Might be possible that the trouble started after I’ve configured time machine, I need to investigate further but the problem is really annoying.

Hi gnlpf, thanks for updating the thread. I was about to try to install Lion again but after reading your having issues, then I realise Apple STILL haven't fixed it. This should have been fixed months ago ... I'm amazed ... truly amazed.

Please let Apple know by spending a couple of minutes filling out the forms here:

If people update them then they cannot deny people are having these issues.

Am I correct in thinking that the Time Machine is the common element amongst all the users of Apple computers who have this problem?

(The problem being that on waking from sleep one finds that the internet connection is, supposedly, lost. I say supposedly because it's not really lost, since iTunes can access internet radio, but neither Safari nor Mail can access the great world outside.)

Well, Time Machine might be the common element, but in my case I am using a local attached hard drive, so no network should be involved. Anyway, I’ll try and see if turning off Time Machine solves the problem. The one thing that really bothers me is that this problem seems to be around for a while and that there is no fix or statement from an Apple official.

Besides, did someone tried restarting the mDNSResponder?

sudolaunchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

sudolaunchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

For me anyhow, it wasn't a DNS problem -- the ethernet and wi-fi connections didn't even get addresses from the DHCP server. The network settings panel showed a red dot next to both services, and 3-5 minutes after waking the machine they went green spontaneously.

And then in mid-October the problem went away. This was either due to 10.7.2, or because I got a UPS. Those happened almost simultaneously so I don't know which was the real solution (or if it was something even more subtle).

As I mentioned before, the problem (just the one you describe) went away for me too (for the most part) in mid-October, but I am still with 10.6.8, so I would conclude that it can't have been 10.7.2 that made the difference.

I think the change for me came after I downloaded a new version of iTunes, but I suppose that Apple may have built in other changes not visible to an ordinary and fairly unsophisticated user like me. (Unsophisticated in that I barely get the drift of your message, with all its acronyms.)

But it does look--does it not?--that the Time Machine is the common thread in this problem. So far, no one has said no.

Maybe -- I thought I had disabled Time Machine for a while to see if that would correct the problem, and I thought I had read earlier in the thread that some weren't using Time Machine at all. It seems like a stretch that either Time Machine or iTunes would impact this problem (both are just applications), but as this seems to be a fairly subtle problem, who knows...

What I meant above was that when I had lost network connectivity, the network panel didn't even show an IP address. On most networks (including my LAN), your machine gets an IP address from the DHCP service in your router. This happens before the machine can talk to the network and, in particular, before it can talk to the DNS server (thus the DNSResponder restart comment previous to mine).

DNS is the service for translating domain names (like "apple.com") to the server's IP address (N.N.N.N).

Sounds REALLY weird, but I got this "ethernet not connected" problem emediately after installing an updated version of iPhoto. When I removed iPhoto and rebooted my computer the problem went away...

I tried all the different solutions before removing the iPhoto update, but didn't give any help. Didn't either have any problems before this with the ethernet port.

Using MacBookPro and 10.7.2 version of Max OS X.

My Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (10.7.2) just started doing it last night, after I did a firmware update.

I tried rebooting, and even after that, as soon as I wake it from sleep, it takes a couple of minutes for Safari / Mail etc to get an Internet connection.

So, I tried the following:

Reboot - No Change

Try different WiFi (2.4GHz rather than 5GHz) - No Change

Restart 2011 AirPort Extreme - No change

Renew DHCP Lease - No Change

Power off, remove power cable, hold down power switch until LED blinks, then do a PRAM reset... - Seems to have sorted it!

I'll monitor this over the next few days.

Cheers

Josh

I’ve done some testing and it least in my case it seems to be a problem with Apples mDNSdaemon.

The problem seems to affect only programs like Safari or Mail. If these programs are losingtheir internet connection, eth0 is still connected to my local switch. Pinging resources in my local LAN or the internet (like google. com) is still possible. I checked the system log and stumbled across entries like this:

mDNSResponder:ERROR: mDNSPlatformReadTCP - recv 37 got CLOSED 117000 times

Afterstopping/restarting mDNSResponder with the following command:

sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

sudo launchctl load/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

Safari andMail had immediate internet access again. So from my point of view, there must be something wrong with Apples special DNS daemon mDNS.

I’ll have a chat with a Apple tech tonight, will be interesting to see what they are thinking.

My Macbook G4 was having this problem, heard it was old age, so I bought a new macbook pro. after two weeks at home the new MBP it will not connect to the internet when using the wifi after waking from sleep. It happens at two unrelated locations, home and work, but both locations use a aiport extreem. Friends along side have no problems connecting so I know it my laptop. The only way to reconnect either laptop is to reboot. This is quite dissapointing. Could have bought a PC for 1/4 the price. I moved to MAC just to avoid all the system crashes and I consider this an unaccecptable crash since it stops me from doing my business.

I will be taking my MBP to the local apple store to see if they can resolve in person.
