iPod Appears on Desktop - But NOT in iTunes

When I connect my iPod to my computer, it shows up on my desktop but DOES NOT appear as a device within iTunes. Obviously then, I can't sync, etc.

Any ideas??

I had a similar problem where itunes would freeze up and not show the iphone. It turned out to be a podcast from NPR, "Wait Wait don't tell me". I loaded it direct on the phone. Try deleting them, then add them back one by one if it works and you want to see which one it is.
Later I loaded new podcasts direct to the computer then sync. No problem. May have created a corrupt file with an incomplete download or something.

Had a similar problem with my son's iPod (30GB) where it would mount but not show up in iTunes (9.02) on my iMac.

After doing the usual restart and reset with no luck, I found that the iPod apparently got stuck in the target disk mode for no known reason.

I reset the iPod (hold Select and Menu button down for 5-10 seconds) then when it restarted, held the Select and Play buttons down to force the Target disk mode.

This seemed to reset the iPod and it showed up in iTunes again where I could update the software and transfer music again.

No idea how it got this way but it seemed to fix the problem for me.
