revert to original file name

Use the Photos->Batch Change->Title to File Name menu option.

There is no way to rename files in iPhoto. When you export you can select various options for naming the exported image, but the original file in iPhoto is unaffected by this. Naming files is the Finder's job, and of course, if you do rename files with the Finder that have been imported to iPhoto you will corrupt your Library.

What Old Toad was referring to was adding or editing a Title for a Photo. This does not rename files, but rather is an entry in the Library database or - on export, should you select to - a field in the metadata.

What happens when you use that menu option? That should change the viewable title in iPhoto to the photo's original file name. If it doesn't launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the last three options and try again.

How did you change the file names originally?

Then there's not way to rename them back to the generic camera name.

You can use the Batch Rename to give them a new sequential title which then can be used for the file name when you export them out of iPhoto. iPhoto will use the following format: XXXXX - 01, XXXXX - 02, etc., with XXXXX being the text you provide. If there are more than 100 files being renamed at one time the extension will be -001, -002, etc.
