Why require credit card in itune for free app?

I think this is one of the things that bugs me coming from BlackBerry to iPhone. Why require entering a credit card for free apps? Is there around this requirements? I am not comfortable giving out my credit card whenever some ask me too.

I've NEVER been charged for a free app. I've never had a bogus charge from iTunes with my credit card on file. There is no need to worry about giving a credit card to iTunes. The worst case would be a false charge which you could dispute with your credit card company and it would go away.

Apple is NOT THE EVIL empire. However, if you're still worried, either get a Apple iTune gift card or a drug store limited credit card.
