Wi-Fi connected, but not connected!?

The Settings indicate I am connected to my local Wi-Fi network (shows the network name with a check mark in front of it), but app's that use Wi-Fi say I'm not connected. I've turned off 'ask to join', stopped Wi-Fi, powered down the phone, but as soon as it powers up again it identifies the local AP name, then a few seconds later, a check mark appears indicating that it has joined the network, but still the app's can't use it. My Mac Book works OK so the Access Point seems as though it is working properly. I did try rebooting the Airport to see if that would help, but the results were the same. I don't know what else to try. My iPhone is running the V3.1.2 firmware and as far as I know this problem started with the last firmware update. I have no idea what else to try to get this thing working again.

 8-core Mac Pro, 10GB Ram, 4TB HDD (internal), Mac OS X (10.6.1), (All tools, no talent!)

Thanks for the help. I upgraded the firmware for my router and it appears my problems are gone. Thank you very much.

+I have the same issue or related issue. My phone shows that I am connected to Wifi but it acts like there is no connection. I will try to open youtube or similar app. It justs waits forever and won't open. Or it will open but then it stops like it lost the connection. I can renew the lease on the connection and that will help for a bit but then I get the same problem a few minutes later. It seems like my phone connects to the wifi but then it loses the connection. I live in a place where I connect to the edge network (no 3g). It is actually quicker to use the edge network than wifi because I have to wait so long for the phone to connect with a website. I think there is some issue between my phone and the router. I use the wifi for a couple of different computers at home without problem. I just recently upgraded my phone from the original iphone to the iphone 3 G S. Same problem. Anyone with any idea s+.

I am not familiar with the dlink router, but if you go to the dlink web site it should have instructions for checking your version and upgrading it if needed.

To set your IP manually first check the IP address of your computer. You can do this by opening an MSDOS command line and typing "ipconfig". The IP address you want is the one associated with your current internet connection, and it will probably begin with "192.168"

Write down the whole thing - for example, 192.168.1.101.

Next open iPhone settings/WiFi. Tap on the arrow to the right of your network name. Tap the "Static" button, then enter an IP address different from your computer and far away from it. Make sure the first 3 numbers are the same. So in this example you might use 192.168.1.199. Make everything else matches your computer's settings.

First, just picking a random static IP address for the iPhone can be a bit tricky, especially if you have several devices on your network. If you want to do it this way, pick up a 'IP scanner' app (several free ones available for both the Mac and WIndows platforms). Turn on every network enabled device you have, do an IP scan to see what addresses are being used, then as suggested, choose a static IP address for the iPhone as far away from the cluster of addresses currently being used as possible. Of course you still run the danger of having your router's DHCP server issuing this address to a new client.

You didn't say what model D-link router you have, but assuming it is like those I've worked with, there is a relatively simple way to have it issue a new IP address to your iPhone and insure that this same address isn't being issued to or used by another network device...

1. Find a router menu called 'Network Settings'. On there should be a list of DHCP clients including the iPhone (assuming it did work properly at one time).
2. Revoke the iPhones lease.
3. On your iPhone, select 'Renew Lease'. This should get it a new, valid IP.
4. Back on the router, find the new entry for the iPhone and select 'Reserve'. This insures that the DHCP server will always use the same IP for your iPhone (thus not confusing it as before).

Based on my own experience, this should work.

I had the same problem yesterday, iPhone would hook to my wifi but when I tried to use it it unhooked. I restored from backup, I restored to factory, I deleted apps, I tried everything, no joy. I eventually discovered my iPhone had the IP address of 160.254.59.250 which is The Bank of New York Mellon Corp, where did that come from? I fought this for hours. The cure, I rebooted the router(Netgear) no problems since. I had a iMac and a MacBook Pro hooked to the same router and they were working fine...Pete
That iPhone had been hooking to that router for 6 months no problems, my wife's iPhone worked normally also.

I think you saw 169.254..., which is the domain assigned by the phone itself if it does net get assigned an IP address by the router within 30 seconds. Most router DHCP servers get "tired" after a few weeks. If you reboot the router (as you did) it will fix the problem. The key that you have a DHCP problem is seeing an IP address that begins with 169.254.

I am having a similar problem, though without a router involved. I have been trying to set up a computer-to-computer network between my Airport-enabled Mac Mini and my iPhone. It works--on alternate Tuesdays after a full moon. That is, just often enough to let me know that it's possible, but mostly not. I can set up the network just fine, the computer acknowledges it, the iPhone acknowledges it and tells me that I've joined, but the 3G indicator stays stubbornly in place, and neither the network nor Bonjour can find the iPhone. Any ideas? (I have similar problems with my building's wireless network, but resetting the Network settings occasionally seems to keep them to a minimum.)

I agree, by the way, with those who say these problems developed after the most recent firmware upgrades.
